My boss has an '01 Prius and he says it has (or rather should have) NAV. According to him, NAV was an available option, but they didn't get the kinks worked out by the time the car was released. It was shipped with NAV disabled, but you could take the car back to get the NAV enabled/installed or whatever. My boss never bothered going back to get it enabled/installed; he's kind of odd that way...

My clasic '02 has NAV. I paid about 4k to have it as an option.
It has a version 1 DVD in it. Know anyone that has a newer version that I can get a copy of?

I'd really doubt Toyota would go to the expense of installing the hardware for the NAV, just to have it disabled. They don't do it on the G2, though the alarm is disabled but otherwise equipped.

DanMan, the NAV was installed as an option in the Classic Prius just like the in the HSD Prius. However, the option did not work early on (for example if you pre-ordered the Classic Prius). It was disabled on Classic Prius which had the NAV option, until later when they got the kinks worked out. Not all Classic Prius had the NAV hardware. I think you misinterpreted what I wrote.

Yup I did. So how did they present the worked out kinks to you and enable the nav? New DVD?

On my classic '02, the DVD nav system is under the front passenger seat. I assume the defeat switch instructions will be mostly the same except for that?

On '03, speed input is pin 5 on connector N2, also a purple wire.
Probably would have the same side effects as on the '04/'05.

I don't know. Like I said, my boss has an '01 Prius with the disabled NAV, not me. He never bothered to take his Prius back to the dealer to get it activated, so I don't know how the story ends.

Just in case you hadn't already found it, there is a software user input way of getting around the NAV speed sensor defeat that was found:

    Navigation Motion Override

    1)Push MENU Button on bezel

    2)Tap the VOLUME soft button

3)Tap top left of screen (where the speaker icon is), then the bottom left, then top left again and finally the bottom left again.

**Perform these taps in rapid sequence. Do not be tentative or it might not work.

    4)The Service Menu should appear.

5)Press and hold the OVERRIDE soft button until it beeps and is highlighted.

Full NAV function should now be available until you shut down the car. This can be engaged while in motion but must be repeated each time the car is restarted.

Be cautious experimenting within the Service Menu as you could cause yourself some problems with your Prius is you push the wrong combination of buttons.

Do you know how to get into service mode in the classic prius?

    Thanks,

Does this mod work on the '06's? Not sure if I have patience to wait till the 06 software backdoor if any to be uncovered.

I suspect the same technique works--interupting the speed sensor wire. What I don't know is if the wire is in the same place. If someone here knows how to read the wiring diagrams confidently I bet they could trace it out. More than likely the speed sensor wires for NAV and BT that were accessible just behind the vent to the right of the radio head unit are unchanged and that's probably your best access spot.

Somebody with an '06 is going to have to do a little research then get a little brave and cut a wire or two to see if it works.

If there's anyone near Nixa, MO with an '06 who wants to give this a try I'm more than willing to help out.

Do you have a copy of the wiring diagram for '06? I want to see if I can make sense out of it.....

You can subscribe to the Toyota TIS web site for $10 for a day and download all the diagrams.

I believe that with an '06 Prius most (if not all) of the NAV functions are available, while driving, via voice commands. I've found that it works well. It's taking me some effort to learn all of the commands. (But, I've always been a slow learner.)

    cheers

I recently added a switch to override the Bluetooth. When I opened up the dash, I found the same colored wires that my 05 had. There was the purple wire for bluetooth and the purple wire for the navigation. I would still prefer to find a software override rather than clip the wire as this solution is not the best in the world. The bluetooth works as it did in the 05. I recall reading a post a couple of weeks ago where someone indicated that Toyota had not left a back door out of the navigation system (defeat) and that they were going to add it and post it in the technical literature. Does anyone recall the post or how I can find it? I wonder if Toyota followed through. Afterall there might be a situation where they need to be driving and also have the ability to access the nav.

    Manny

I don't know the answer to the second part of your post...sorry.

But thank you for confirming that the speed sensor wires are the same in the '06 and that the wire cut/switch override will work.

Yes, the 2006 Wiring Manual shows it as a Violet wire on pin #4 of N3, which is the largest of the 3 connectors on the NAV, a 24-pin connector it would appear, and to pin #20 of connector M13 of the MFD.

How to Install a Navigation System Defeat Switch - Alternate Approach

Just traded in my 2000 Odyssey for my new 2009 Prius Pkg. 5. I was on my way to a Christmas party, got lost, and found out the hard way you cannot enter non-emergency destinations while moving. The factory navigation system on my Odyssey had no such restrictions. IMHO driving is all about managing distractions, right? I paid for the navigation system but am not allowed to use it? Ridiculous!

I was hesitant to drill holes in the dash speaker or armrest as others have done for fear of hurting resale value. I surveyed other potential locations and decided to install the switch under the driver's seat. I was going to use the recommended Radio Shack switch but hate soldering. I instead purchased a SPST switch with screw terminals. I attached the switch to an L-bracket and connected approx. 2 ft. of 2-conductor 18 AWG stranded wire I had laying around my garage to the switch. I could have used lighter gauge wire but that is all I had. I used Loctite Blue 242 Thread Locker on the switch terminals and also where the switch mounts to the L-bracket to prevent vibration-induced loosening. I picked up an existing hole in the front arched-shaped part of the driver under-seat frame and drilled a 2nd L-bracket mounting hole. I attached the L-bracket to the seat with #8-32 bolts and matching nylon lock nuts.

I cut the factory 22 AWG purple speed sensor wire about 1.5 inches from where it plugs into the under-seat navigation system DVD drive. There is barely enough exposed wire to work with but it is doable. I routed the 18 AWG switch wires under the seat over to the DVD drive and left extra slack to allow the seat to move back and forth. I used strap ties to secure the switch leads to the seat in various spots. I stripped the purple speed sensor wire and used red insulated butt splices to crimp the switch leads to the factory speed sensor wire. I put some heat shrink over the splice and over the switch terminals. I found it easier for part of the job to recline the driver seat all the way and lie face down on the seat with my head under the steering wheel and my feet on the back seat.

The switch is discretely located out of sight, but within reach of my right middle finger (take that Toyota) and works as advertised. I can easily deinstall the switch when it comes time to sell or trade.

Warning. Do this mod at your own risk! You could damage your car or hurt yourself. Be very careful if cutting the factory speed wire as I did near the plug. There is very little exposed sensor wire to work with and there is a risk of damaging the plug, adjacent signal wires, or other unrelated component. The speed sensor wire is very delicate. If you get reckless with wire cutters you looking at a potentially difficult repair.
