Garmin does not give you quarterly map updates for free.

It depends on what you mean by "free". Some models come with lifetime updates. For other models you can purchase lifetime updates for $99. My Garmin came with updates and they work well.

Is this mounted with a Garmin or aftermarket mount? If aftermarket, what one?
    Tks

Its mounted with the one that comes with the Garmin GPS. There are nearly identical after market mounts. I bought one when I had 2 cars and one Garmin.

I never said "Free" updates, my exact quote was:
"Many here use a Garmin or other portable GPS that are more reliable and include quarterly map updates."

"Included" does not equal "Free" and I never said it did.
The higher price of the "lifetime maps" versions of the Garmin GPS units versus the non-lifetime map units reflect the "included" cost of quarterly lifetime map updates at no additional cost to the end user. You pay for the quarterly lifetime map updates when you purchase the GPS, so they're certainly not "free".

My Garmin GPS (3790 LMT)is smartphone size and 1/4" thick, includes lifetime quarterly map updates- which also include audible traffic camera alerts, lifetime traffic info, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice command capability was an incredible value when I bought it for $239.

I have two Garmin's and they dont compare with the HDD navigation on the PIP Advanced in my opinion, just my 2 cents.
One Garmin has the lifetime updates included the other does not, it has nothing to do with the updates, to me it's just the installed OEM HDD navigation is so much better, no wires or mess and a larger screen where it should be visible. Additionally the HDD Toyota system includes traffic I also do not like the Garmin interface or the rerouting logic that is used in the Garmin system. The HDD Toyota system with XM traffic is way superior. The map updates are a joke, they are trying to make you think they are giving you something special, but quarterly map updates are a joke.

I'm kind of uncertain why people pay for GPS units in this day and age. Unless someone needs (or prefers) a really high end unit, Google Navigation is free, gets updated a ton, and even lets you know about traffic issues.

I do understand there are people that don't have smartphones...but then again...if you have a GPS unit and a scangauge, you probably spent $300+ bucks for what cost me about $15. Might be cheaper to consider a smartphone (it does lots of other stuff, too)

Joke? They regularly show changes/additions that have been constructed in our area. There's nothing special here so I'm sure that is true for other areas as well.

I've never used the HDD system. Can you program a route that is the one you want rather than "shortest" or "quickest". Its one feature that I often use with the Garmin.

It's been too many years, it's hard to remember if I got a windshield mount with my Nuvi 360 Garmin and just cannot find it now. Well it seems mine did come with one that mounts only perpendicular to window, so won' work on side window (if if I could find it! ;o) :(
