I pulled the plastic panels off and drilled 4 holes and used a zip tie both ways so ballast would not slide out. Not best fit or look but only decent place to mount. Ran the wire over the front under the edge of the black plastic cover. Will try to post some pics tomorrow if that will help. Did cut hot wire connector and bought a 1/4 inch (.25) female connector like other post recommended. Will type up more detailed info tomorrow for you. With pics

    Thanks.
Sound like a good way to install this. I like to leave the ballast exposed as well just because for future troubleshooting..

I have received my hid kit from amazon OPT7 55W 5K last Tuesday. This kit fit my budget so I will give it a shoot.
Installation process was pretty tricky to find a way to install the ballast. I end up using the direction from xenon supply but without removing the coolant tank on the passenger side.

I have fired up the light before my installation. Everything was working and very minor flickering. Only noticed about 1sec fast flickering and gone. Warmed up in 3-5sec. Intensity is really bright compare to my prius original light and no shadow (the return is at the bottom bulb). No complain so far...

This kit is only $69 free shipping. If this light last for 1-2, will be a great bargain..

FYI, I have checked multiple websites that are selling 55w hid for $99-$129. When I compare OPT7 hid to their kits, visually it is looking exactly the same. See picture below.

    Can anyone tell the diff?

One thing for sure my kit from OPT7 has a big made in China sticker on the ballast instead of made in Germany.....

Are the ballasts digital, AC or DC? Also, did you use a relay harness, or are you directly hooked up to the OEM lowbeam wiring?

According to the description in amazon, it's AC ballast. This kit comes with relay harness and also the capacitor. But I did not use them. The ballast is directly connected to the original prius connector. It's so simple and you will not miss it.

The relay harness came with your kit, you should use it.

Ok. I will find some time next week to add this harness.
So What is the disadvantage of not using this harness? What about the capacitor unit?

    Another question.
the fuse in the relay harness comes with 30A. Is this correct?

FYI, from the schematic, This harness is providing voltage/ current to both ballast. Maybe this is the reason for the high amperage fuse in the harness.

The relay harness does provide power to both ballasts directly from the battery, or in the case of the Prius, from a fuse box terminal. Therefore, it bypasses the OEM wiring which isn't designed to handle the voltage surge/demand that the ballasts have when they ignite the HID arc in the bulbs.

That is why HIDs sometimes fail to ignite/light when turned on. Using a relay harness gives your ballasts a more stable and reliable power supply.

The only thing your OEM wiring does in a relay harness equipped HID system is supply the control signal to the relay to pass power to the ballasts. This signal current is in the mA range, not Amps, so it basically takes all the load of running HIDs off your lowbeam circuit.

Thanks. I will find space to add in the relay harness. It's not that hard from the schematic.

Refer to the picture posted in post #41 for the terminals you can use for the power wire for your HID relay harness.

Yes. I have tested the 2 flat pins for 12v. What about the return? Which screw did you use?

I am using an open, threaded bolt hole between the fuse box and driver's headlight. I had a metric bolt in my toolbox that was a perfect fit. Here's where it is:

Others use the bolt on top of the fender next to the engine fuse box.

Ok. Pretty much any metal screw will work. Will check with voltmeter.

Yes, and maybe not a good idea to use any bolt for ground. ;)

I would avoid using a bolt on the inverter for example. I once used one of the exposed bolt heads on the inverter as a ground point when testing for 12v in Ready mode with my multimeter.

That was the time I got the Check Hybrid System error message on the MFD!

Seems that message can appear when an unexpected grounding or current flow is detected through the inverter or related hybrid components. I was able to clear the error condition by cycling the Start/Off several times (Whew), so just use a bolt on the body or chassis, not on the inverter or other engine covers, brackets, etc. just to be safe.

I reiterate! in over 80,000 kms and 2 years I have had no problems with not using a relay harness with my 55w system. It is necessary with some 35 watt systems because can-bus needs to know 55 w is flowing to headlights. With 55 w systems it is unnecessary and needlessly complicating.
