Can you imagine the fun the lawyers would have if you floored it to avoid an accident, and the system decided to NOT provide all the power it could? That information would in the "black box" data recorder.

No grill blocking. 78 would be for the wife ;). I normally keep it around 74. If the trip is over 8 miles one way, I typically start in HV mode anyways and leave it in EV mode for the return trip. I've usually exhausted all EV by the time I pull into the garage even when below zero.

Why not grill block? Super easy and it will pay for itself rather quickly.

Yesterday went on a trip to northern Minnesota, two people 420 miles round trip. Early morning up, 10 degrees, late afternoon back 32 degrees. little wind, 10 mph or so.
Set temp. in car at 68 degrees, fan speed 3 was quite comfy!, only could get 59 mpg on the read out. I'am happy! :D

Does anybody know what the normal coolant temp is, driving on interstate at 65mph, for an extended time, I'm running about 197 deg.F with lower grill blocked! ( using Torque )

That is pretty normal. As long as you aren't seeing it creep up into the low 200's you are fine. What was the temperature out. Personally I probably wouldn't do extended interstate drives with grill blocking in much above 30.

I had the windshield defroster on for about 15 minutes this morning. It didn't change until I hit the button again to turn the light off.

Freeway speeds on level ground (or downhill) shouldn't be a problem at all, because the volume of air that makes it in past the blocked grille is much higher than at lower speeds. Long climbs might be an issue, but probably not at 50-60 degree temps. You can always blast the heater if you're worried about transient heat loads.

I never use auto. It annoys me that it starts with high (noisy) fan speed. Never had that problem with manual.

Yet more proof that everyone is different.

I go on and on to family and friends about how the AUTO feature is one of my favorite of the whole vehicle.

I've owned a long line of cars that had auto HVAC systems. I guess that's why it does what I want. :D

I find AUTO very effective both on A/C and heating. The start high does not bother me knowing it is for a good reason (complying to my demand of large temp difference). It automatically goes down to minimum required fan speed - another plus.
My winter temps are not going very low though...
