In cold temps, ICE turns on at the begining of a trip when I have plenty EV. Why?

This morning bright and early I went outside into the 7°F air to brush the 2" of "Partly Cloudy" we got overnight from something we call "Lake Effect" off the PiP so I could drive 50+ miles from my house to Rochester, NY on the New York State Thruway skating rink to go to a Train Show at RIT... Having cleared all the partly cloudy off the PiP I got into the 7°F interior of the car and pushed the little round "Power" button. The Ice was running before I took my finger off the "Power" button. I thought it was because I didn't turn the Cabin Air System off after I drove it home in 12°F temps last night. Nope everything was off except the ICE. Didn't mind a bit either.

It was nice to have heat in the car and I didn't care if I was burning Fossilized Dinosaur Dung and giving $$$ to the Fossil fuel Industry! When it is 7°F outside (and inside the car) I don't mind at all.... By the time I got home from the show my driveway now has 4" of "Partly Cloudy" from the "Lake Effect". But that they say will change as a plain old Winter storm will take over and dump 7 to 10" of the white stuff in my driveway by the time I need to drive back to Rochester for the second day of the Train Show tomorrow! I expect the ICE to start right up and get me warmer than 7°F as soon as I press "Power" again tomorrow! Of course driving 55 mph on the 65 mph Thruway and only getting 46mpg isn't great either..... There were folks doing faster with them Foe Wheeeeeel Drahves! Yippy!!! Hey, Yall, Watch Theeeis vehicles. There were a bunch of them there things off the road in the ditch, there were. Pip drove great and handled the "Partly Cloudy" with no problems. And... I was going as fast as the Big Rigs were too (they evidently like to drive on the road and not in the ditch also!).

I know this is more or less off topic, but just had to post it!

Garage.... Nope! PiP and small trailer I still own sit out in all kinds of weather... Now my son has a Two car garage that houses a boat he will never finish and get running, all kinds of furniture, and huge piles of junk! The 3 cars and the other almost operable boat sit outside in the driveway...;)

Nope. Never made sense to me to own a garage and not have your car in it.

Yes, that' s what I reckoned. Same route this morning, with temp back down to 5/40, but careful not to accelerate fast, and ICE didn't come on. So it seems to be a combination of temp and draw on the battery, as far as I can see.

Oh, and I confess to having TWO garages and parking outside... Admittedly one has been fitted out internally as an office, but the other is simply full of junk.

i never understood the junk in the garage syndrome. we see a good bit of it over here, but with our weather, i'd rather get rid of it than shovel and scrape my window everyday.:p

The bigger problem over here is that UK cars used to be smaller, so a lot of garages, mine included, are really too small for modern cars. That's my excuse, anyway!

my garage is cleaner than many parts of my house, now if only I had a PiP, Leaf, or Tesla to put in it.

My regular Prius does at least stay 50+ in the garage when it is below freezing outside. Lets me keep the heat off when I pull out of the garage, though I do have to run defrost/defogging if it gets humid enough.

Well, he is right. ICE runs to get itself at operating temp as well as the cat convertor. Emissions come into play, completely outside of the drivers' control regardless of what position of level of heat desired. All done with the onboard network.

Yes, if in ev mode and recharge is done. No, if ev range is approaching depletion, the ice will kick on to recharge battery.

If, no ice at ev depletion mode, CEl /MIL code will trip - time to do a scan, or take it to the dealer to correct. Hopefully, this is corrected asap, HV batteries are not cheap.
