I think the suggestions help since I have used them (keeping gas to floor) and it made the shaking stop right away.

 

Yes, I agree, that does seem to stop it for most vehicles. And that is probably all that needs to be done. But it doesn't prevent it from happening again. Which is what needs to be corrected.

Ice storm in progress effecting all of DFW. Called dealer and canceled appointment. Since a new IM may not fix the problem and since it is a rare event for us and since many nice users have posted remedies that work, we will just live with it. Thanks to all who have replied.

Thanks for the YouTube video. I had the same problem a week ago. Very scary. It disappeared when I put into drive and it has not returned.

 

FYI - I might be looking at this wrong but it looks like there are many part numbers that fit that part code with the same engine.

Spiderman, maybe you got the part number that works and other folks may have gotten a different number and the problem returns.

Your 2010 has a part # from 2011-2012, if I read the chart correctly.

Maybe folks can list the part number that was installed in the TSB.
Next to each part number, indicate if the problem is fixed, so far or the problem returned??

Right, we determine that there were a few iterations/versions of the IM, obviously Toyota trying to work the bug out.

Perhaps. But as I mentioned before, I had the two episodes in fall of 09. Didn't have any up to the point they replaced the IM in spring 12 (after I insisted). So who knows if it would have happened again.?

That would be a great investigation ( a poll ?).

 

For what it's worth, my replacement IM part #...52 was the same as Spiderman's, and the issue has recurred several times for me.

 

My '12 had IM 37052 and the problem developed as it got colder in Nov. 2012. When Toyota replaced it they installed 37054. That IM now has the same problem. Ironically, a neighbor moved in across the street last summer. She has a '12 and came over last week very concerned as hers did it for the first time. I looked and hers has 37052. She takes hers to the dealership tomorrow for "testing" to recreate the problem. According to Toyota USA, with the newest problems my status is being upgraded somewhere and some Toyota engineer is supposed to contact me and the dealer.

 

I will say this-- This morning, the car had sat under snow all weekend untouched, so I was anticipating a potential knocking event.

Got in the car, turned it on, floored the gas (pedal method) as soon as the engine kicked on, and sure enough- the second between when the engine kicked on and I was going to push the pedal, I heard a knock, but as soon as the pedal was pressed down, the knocking stopped completely. So now a (still somewhat skeptical) believer in the pedal method, as I feel a potential bad knocking event was avoided.. not sure if that's what stopped it or if the knocking would have continued and I just lucked out, but I'll be continuing to employ this method now every time I start the car in cold temps.

 

Press and "release" the accelerator immediately after power on...but before ice kicks in...if you can.

 

Latest update: 12-11-13, Toyota USA called and said the engineer is "...awfully busy..." and may not be able to come and check the problem. They want me to take the car back to dealer so they can try to replicate the noise. They already have replicated the noise. I have the invoices that state same. Another two or three days without my car OR a loaner, and they might or might not say it happened and here goes the run around all over again. Same story, a year later. Surely someone in the Toyota system knows what is causing the problem and what needs to be done to fix it for good. Obviously new IM's don't solve the problem. If quick gas pedal depression was meant to be the desired method of starting the car, the manual should say so. I don't believe that I, or anyone else, should have to accept a work-around. Perhaps they should just sell the Prius in hot weather environments where the owner will know no difference. I've had Toyota's since 1979 and NEVER had an issue until this. I'm running out of patience.

FYI-
I did a search and the folks over at the CT200h forums are having the same issue with the cold engine knocking at start up.

They have the same kind of TSB that includes the intake manifold and motor mount.

They also get the same Toyota response we do from the Lexus dealers. The dealer does not acknowledge the problem if someone mentions it and the dealer does not add the fix unless the they see the codes and it can be reproduced.

 

I find it hard to accept, that "Toyota", of all mfg.'s, missed this issue during R&D, (or chose to ignore).....as for myself, I will be looking at other choices next time around.....

 

This thread is about an issue that I think makes it deserving of it's "sticky" status.
But I wish we would remove the word "New" from the title.

The original post is approaching a year old, and service bulletin TSB-0012-10 is no longer a "New" bit of information.

I see this, and the word "New" and like Pavlovs dog I respond, only to realize it's the same service bulletin information basically given a year ago.

I'm getting denser in my old age....I need all the help I can get. It ain't new anymore.
