After several years of decline starting in 2009 when Honda went through a real down period across the entire company, they are on a steady rise again. The current generation Accord is pretty solidly the best 'regular' sedan on the market today.

I drove a new Accord just to see what it was like. It was one of the better driving experiences I've had in a family sedan in many years. That used to be the case with Accords, but they had fallen back in recent generations. The new one is a real pleasure to drive, although no hybrids were on the lot that day. Every review I've read on the new hybrid Accord has been extremely good. It's a very nice car, and after driving the new Camry and Fusion and others, it's definitely my favorite.

our new hycam is up 10 mpg over our last one. but looking at prius vs hycam sales, not that many people want a sedan.

You can hardly get a Yaris for $16k, and cruise control is only available as part of a deluxe package that pushes the car up to $19k. Your car sounds very nice in comparison, and I can hardly think of any further options I'd want. Manual seats are nice because electrics take an eternity to adjust. I like to have manual control over the lights too, since I don't like them always on. The only nice thing about the electric seats in my TSX is the memory, so my wife can drive with her own settings.

I'd say the Prius is in a class of it's own, for the very reason you mention, that they attract different buyers. For something to be a Prius killer, it's got to offer something that competes with the class of car Toyota created with the Prius. It will take a lot more than premium leather seats and soft touch paneling.

As for the Jetta TDI, it was near the top of my list. If it had reliability closer to an Acura, it'd be my huckleberry.

Depends on needs...I'm into RC airplanes and RC cars so I need a hatchback or suv. The accord is very nice but would not fit my needs. I like the upscale look of my Prius Four.

yes, diesels do exist, and modern diesel cars are remarkably clean. But there are areas of the country -- and mine seems to be one -- where gasoline stations that sell diesel are few and far between.

I don't think the Accord Hybrid will be a Prius killer ...

    1) Look at Accord Hybrid trunk. It's wide, but only 25" back to front, 20" less than conventional Accord
    2) base Acc Hybrid near $30k sticker has no nav. Prius Three ($26.x k ) has nav
    3) Look at the Accord Hybrid trunk again, then Prius with rear seats folded down ...
    4) Look at Accord EX-L for $29k sticker with much bigger trunk ....
    5) Notice there is barely any stock on Accord Hybrid
    6) buy Accord EX-l or Prius

I'll bet this plays out over and over

Around here every diesel pump has a nice black stinky mess on the ground from spilled fuel. The pump handle is a brown slimy mess. When I drove big truck, I'd never even think of grabbing that fuel pump handle without wearing leather work gloves as I knew my hands would stink. Then after fueling, those stinky dirty gloves would have to go in the storage compartment under the sleeper as they smelled like hell. Could not imagine driving a clean diesel car with grubby dirty hands, shoes that smelled like diesel from standing in the slop at the pump, or storing gloves anywhere in the car as the interior would smell like fuel forever. Might be different in other parts of the country but not any diesel pumps I have ever seen in my travels around the country.

I don't really understand this penchant for diesels. Diesels are dirty! always have been always will be. The future is in greater electrification not internal combustion.

Diesel train locomotives use the same engineering concept. There are more efficient power sources on the horizon than diesel generators.

Nope. Just because we can't see the color of the gases escaping our tailpipe it does not mean that gasoline is cleaner. Albeit there are some <Tired> Diesels that do smoke and pollute a lot.

Here in the US Ford single-handedly wiped out the Diesel engine. They built a series of trucks with a Petrol to Diesel conversion in 70's. Unfortunately the rods, pistons and other parts failed frequently. So they recalled the engines and put regular petrol engines.

A well-mainained Diesel with good compression, Low-Pressure Turbo, and advanced ECU can easily get 40+ MPG while driving like a maniac.

Even the old heavy early 80's - early 2000's E300 Mercedes Benz Diesels get 40MPG.
Those things are tanks with wheels are are not even hybrid!

Then we have the whole green revolution going on, and I say that soon we will simply grow our Diesel from plants. Or we could now recycle Waste Vegetable Oil from MacDonald's, filter it and pour it in the gas tank.

I am wondering the same thing! I have had several different makes of cars in my time and the ONLY maker to actually get mpg advertised has been Toyota...

All the best from Luna's Lass!!
