Just to confirm the hours, The Toyota dealer showed me some printout (which could have been whatever they wanted to show me in the first place anyway) that said 16.9 hours for swap and their labor rate was $104. Well at the end of the day, I left that dead gen II prius (which also needed new xenon lights, body work, and interior work) at the dealer and drove home in a new Prius V. Wow there is lots more room in that V!!!! We were considering this change anyway, but I would have just preferred to make it on my own terms.
If you dont mind, how much did they give you for your gen 2? Congrats on the new car, hopefully you wont lose too many mpgs.
Thanks for the link--I am looking into it but may go with the 2-day version when I get serious about major repairs to minimize costs. Priuschat folks have also been good about links to relevant YouTube videos and you are correct that they are better than Haynes manuals. But a Haynes manual is also better than nothing and about the same as many shop manuals in the old days (60s and 70s) IMO, and old habits die hard. But I must admit I lost faith in Haynes when they started having sections that said "don't even try this, take it to the dealer" ! I would guess that Haynes will NOT detail the removal and cell by cell repair of the HV traction battery due to the legal issues if one of us eager beavers electrocutes himself, which is understandable but limits the usefulness of the manual.
My favorite was the Chilton manual. How to remove engine: 1. Open hood. 2. Remove engine. How to install engine: 1. Reverse above procedure.
I just joined the 300k club last night! 2008 model bought new in Oct 2007. Had to replace the ICE at 292,500. The old one burnt through a piston. I accidentally reset the mph back at 150k when I was having headlight issues and I was playing with buttons. Whoopsie... Before the old ICE started going south I was averaging 45.6 mpg and it was about the same on the 1st 150k. I haven't put the grill blocker in for winter yet and since it's cold now, the mpg is down to 44.5. Oh... and the speed limit on my main route to and from work has increased to 70. I sure that has nothing to do with lower mpg... The main battery is still going strong. This little car has more than paid for itself!!!
Replacing an engine on a 300k car shows a lot of trust in the other components. If you do not telling, how much did the engine replacement cost ?
im officially over 299,999, probably about 306k. hv battery still working good with the few cells i put in. got a new problem, but should be an easy fix. a few nights it has gotten to freezing temps, my computer seems to have been having problems. when i started the car none of the dash worked, seat belt chime didnt work. the first 2 times this happened the car drove just fine the regeneration was working but no dash or mph. after 10 minutes of driving/warming up car, i turned off and turned back on for everything to work this morning it did it again except for the car wouldnt turn off after 10/15 minutes, so i finished traveling to work about another 10/15 minutes. when i got there car wouldnt turn off, i disconnected the 12v battery both p/n cables and car still wouldnt turn off, i disconnected the hv fuse and car turned off. put hv fuse back in 20 minutes later and hooked up 12v battery. when the 12v battery first connected lights on dash, park, on/off button were all light up. put key in and car wouldnt turn off. disconnected 12v battery again for few minutes and reconnected. car turns off and on few times normally. i will probably get a computer to see if that will help fix things. should be able to find pretty cheap
Interesting choice to replace the ICE. Me thinks I would have used that money to get another used one or even a new one.
The biggest replacement was the engine @ 400k miles. Other things ive replaced include the 12v twice, radiator cooling fan assembly, coolant switching valve for the thermos, blower motor, combination meter, a wheel hub assembly, ball joints, tie rods, brake pads(on 3rd set), shocks and struts. I recently replaced the shoes (2nd set) and drums. Theres probably a couple other things but nothing major.
