The Prius has NEVER used a NiCd battery. My first generation 2002 model used nickle metal hydrid (NiMH).

Any little acceleration will start the ICE, usually when entering mainstream traffic. It takes a lot of self discipline to slowly accelerate to speed. That along with the confusing HVAC controls add to the problem. Toyota almost got it right with the C, a much simpler HVAC. Again.....it's all temperature dependent.

Hopefully you mean in HV mode with your first sentence, because there is plenty of power in EV. Also not sure how hitting AUTO on the HVAC is confusing.

Plenty of power for my need too.

Starting out in default mode: ie: EV. PRESS TOO HARD and the ICE will start and you will be in HV until warm-up completion, unless you restart. I never said anything about hitting AUTO on the HVAC. Actually I never press Auto at all, too wasteful.

I never mentioned Power in any mode.

You have 38 kW from the battery.

ICE max out put is 73 kW. For ICE to make 38 kW, it needs to rev about 3,000 rpm.

I guess it depends on the definition of "press too hard", in my (short) experience I have never been in a situation of triggering the ICE this way.

Ya, that would do it. Especially if it was at all uphill.

Not to much up hill, but if you know anything about north Jersey drivers, they will try and run right over you if you don't get out fast.

If that's your driving condition and need pure EV acceleration, PiP is not the car for you.

Even if you manage to accelerate with EV slowly, you will take 2-3 EV miles reduction. Recharging it would need about 45 mins.

Using gas in that condition is better.

That really is the prevailing situation in most of the US. One wants to get into the traffic without slowing anybody else. Except Nebraska. And other very rural areas.

Remarkabele, not everybody can choose where to live. In reality we all have to adjust to our local aspects, desirable or not. Across from NYC conditions are similar to the City. Jersy City, Bayonne. However Asbury Park and even Atlantic City are very livable. You can't really count weather anomalies. But travel in rural areas of Jersy are similar to the rest of the country. And there is countryside everywhere.

Never been to Nebraska, but doesn't sound like a place I would want to live in, I'll take the occasional hard excelleration ,just to live a hour and a half from the ocean and in the opposite direction mountains to ski on and with in site of the most exciting city in the world. No stickers to put on my bumper to drive around on, and the best sports town in the country!

Very true. To each their own.

But to be fair...most Colorado folk would laugh if you call those mountains. ;)

And personally I've been to every major city in the US except Houston, San Antonio, and San Diego. And out of all of them to visit again, NY isn't even in my top ten. But again...to each their own.

We have one of those freeways here in LA. The 110 fwy to Pasadena from downtown is the original freeway built in 1940. There is no acceleration lane. Curves from the neighborhood streets drop you right onto the freeway. The speed limit is 55 mph, but in true Southern California charm, everyone drives 75 to 80 mph. I've seen cars splattered all over that freeway. Hate it and won't drive on it.
