I was talking about the dash switch. I thot the comment meant that the switch would not work for US left-hand drive cars.

I had told my guy to buy it, then I shot him an email minutes later (after reading the post on here) and told him to see if it will even fit a US Prius before we proceed.... I was just getting ready to call him and tell him to go ahead now. I'd much rather have a lit one, cause it's already hard enuf to see things (to me) inside the Prius at night.

The JDM switch part number is 84870-28040:

If you don't mind sacrificing your 2012 switch, you can do what I did and mod it so it illuminates:

You basically swap out the control pad from the 2012+ mirror switch, since the "MIRROR" is translucent and allows light to pass through and add two SMD LED chips onto the JDM switch:

Trim down the rectangular plastic wall so it makes contact with the six contact points on the JDM mirror switch.

I wouldn't recommend doing this because you effectively lose your OEM 2012+ illuminated switch. You have one shot at trimming down the rectangular plastic wall on the control pad - i.e. you mess up, you render your 2012+ switch useless. Oh and removing the control pad from the 2012+ switch is a big challenge with risk of breaking clips being very high.

If you don't mind the implied risks involved, then it is possible for 2012+ Prius owners to convert their JDM non illuminated switch into an illuminated switch without buying a new switch.

There's another Toyota switch that illuminates everything; i.e. the power folding button, "MIRROR" and L & R. I think it's found on the JDM Vellfire MPV and on certain Lexus models with folding mirrors. I bought said switch, used, from eBay for $75.00 listed as a Lexus switch but has the 16-pin 2012+ Prius connector behind it.

    Good post!

So the Lexus switch you purchased did not work with your 2012 or it did?

    Thanks!

It fits, but not without a good amount of wire work which probably isn't worth it for most folks here.

1.) Had to reverse wire the folding module (since it was designed for non-illuminated switches) to work
2.) Had to mod the plug. The Lexus switch has 27 pins; the 2012+ Prius has 11 pins, the non-illuminated switch has 9 pins

    illuminated-switch.jpg

It's missing the "MIRROR" lettering which can be swapped from the 2012+ switch, but since I've modded my OEM switch, as you can see, it's no longer swappable.

I'll probably JB weld it back to original state using sheets of plastic from Michael's and swap it into this Lexus switch at a later time when I have time. I'll probably write up a DIY guide for those that are truly interested, but as it is - probably not worth the time and cost for most folks here to go through all the trouble just to get a fully illuminated mirror switch.

FYI - It lights up in the same green found on the 2012+ Prius switch.

Oh wow, thanks for the thoughtfulness and I would totally take up your offer but I live all the way in Jacksonville. I'm from Boca originally though, so I know where you're at. Let me know when you plan on doing the mod, maybe if all my stars align I can drive down there. Where and what parts are you planning on getting it from?
