Usually hybrids are very slow accelerating and not-fun rides for sports car enthusiasts. As Jay Leno said, "It's a different kind of fun." But for those who like to accelerate and drive fast, it isn't so fun.

This all changes with the new Honda Accord Hybrid 2014. At Motor Trend and other sites, the reviewers were able to get up to 77+ MPG by taking it easily on the gas and driving 45 MPG.

But at Gas2.org, the reviewers loved pedal-to-the medal driving the Honda Accord Hybrid and got 60 mpg while having a lot of fun driving. The Honda Accord Hybrid drives like a slot-car. And it makes drivers want to drive FAST.

Gas 2 | What is the future of fuel? What's new? What's next? Since 2007, Gas 2 has covered a rapidly changing world coming to terms with its oil addiction.

The Honda Accord Hybrid has no transmission. The electric motor and gas engine are directly connected to the wheels. The engine connects via a clutch to act as a 6th gear. Otherwise power to the wheels is from the electric motor. There is no CVT whine. And the electric engine has over 240 pound-feet of torque straight from 0 MPH to top speed. And it has 196 horsepower.

The Honda Accord Hybrid is bigger than the Prius, is quieter, more luxurious, has more power and is far more fun to drive FAST. And it has the power to drive up hills while accelerating.

    It costs $29,000. Available today.

This is the real reason Toyota dropped the price of the Prius Plug-in. It now has real competition that can eliminate it.

Toyota will have to do a lot to top this Honda Accord Hybrid.

Hopefully Toyota has something up its sleeves - like the new Prius - or some new version of the Camry Hybrid.

Unfortunately for Toyota, the Honda Accord Hybrid is available today. The new Prius is up to a year away. A new Camry Hybrid... wishful thinking at this time.

I wonder what would happen if Honda placed this new hybrid drive-train in the much lighter Honda Civic. That is something to contemplate.

The Accord Hybrid should not be compared to the PiP. I will say that the Accord Hybrid's stats and performance do seem to put the conventional Prius to shame.

As for the Accord Plug-in, which is the relevant comparison to the PiP, with basically the same MSRP ($40k) as the Advanced PiP, to me the Honda Accord Plug-in's Achilles heel is the same as the C-Max and Fusion Energi's - there is basically no trunk. So disappointing Honda.

The Honda Accord Hybrid is not available 'today'. It will arrive at dealerships on Halloween, Oct. 31st, 2013 according to Honda press release.

The 'review' above sounds a bit too good to be true ..... 'we were blasting through backroads and getting 60 MPG, wheeeee '

The Honda Accord Hybrid is not going to overtake any Toyota hybrid sales soon as it will be production constrained for a while. How constrained, I don't know.

In the real world, I'll bet Accord Hybrid gets people something around 45 MPG combined give or take a couple which is really good, but ....

Hybrid buyers will continue to look for low prices (Prius Twos) and highest MPG (my gage keeps reading 60 MPG when arriving home after 28 mile round trip)

Accord Hybrid has no reliability history and most will wait and see how it looks after a couple or few years.

I'd love to get out of this Prius ASAP (it's a penalty box to sit in) and into an Accord (hybrid?), but it'll have to wait a few or more years.

Not surprised Honda wanted to make Accord Hybrid 'fun to drive'. Flipping through a 2011 Consumer Reports guide, most Hondas are 'agile' handling while most Toyotas are 'secure but not agile'. What you get with Toyota is about the highest reliability available in any cars. So, you might be bored and it'll never break down.

Does driving in B mode = no regen in this car?

The Accord looks like a great car on paper and in initial reviews. The question still remains about how reliable they turn out to be in the long run and what kind of mileage people actually get. I'm willing to give Honda the benefit of the doubt that they've solved these issues, but the fact still remains that these are expensive cars. They aren't offering an entry level version, which means it starts over $7k above the regular gas LX model, and $5k above the Prius. It will be interesting to see what they do with the Civic. If it offers similar performance, similar economy, and they bring back a hatch version, that could well be my next car.

I'm looking forward to seeing the reported, "roll-down" coefficients for this car. Delayed by the USA government shutdown, we should see them no later than March 2014. This will let us plot the drag HP as a function of speed to compare this car with the existing Honda Accord and Prius family.

I have a lot of respect for Honda engine technology and this architecture is stronger than their earlier IMA family. This car has a good chance of being fairly efficient, tank-to-wheel. But some of the claims about aggressive driving and high MPG suggests starting and ending battery charge levels may need a closer look. For example, I've not been happy with sandbagging Prius performance by doing a warm-up and forced charge when reporters are expected to an event like the old Hybridfest. No problem with the warm-up but a forced charge . . . not quite fair.

The best result will be from those who calculate their mileage in regular service . . . especially former Prius owners. If like the CMAX, we start seeing 'disappointing' results from the pioneers, well the engineering data will be available soon enough.

I wonder if those high MPG readings coming off SCANgauge or equivalent. Mine was showing 65 MPG the other day trip home from Baltimore, but we were more like 52 on the MFD display and when I do the hard math at home with real gaso fill-up numbers usually lucky to get 49 MPG. Admittedly I am a SCANgauge novice.

I fear hybrid engines becoming nice engine power upgrade for higher end models in the line-up even Camry hybrid. Our gasoline taxes in USA low enough that the hybrid option is not a clear savings unless you put on lots of miles, in that case OK hybrid wins.

Sounds like it is heavier regen than regular D and the Prius B, but we won't know until better details come out.
Would selling more cars, but with more issues, help Honda out? It's a redesigned model with a whole new hybrid drive train. Beyond greed, only offering a higher trim keeps production at a lower level until the work force and suppliers are experienced and have things ironed out. The first gen Camry and Fusion hybrids didn't have a lower priced trim.

Honda's seemed higher priced to me, but I'll wait until we can make an apples to apples feature comparison before judging if the price is in line or not.

My guess is that it is the car's display. Which I'll assume is over reporting until proven otherwise.

I am very interested in this car. I think it is cool how the gas engine is mostly a generator for the battery power. I am going to check one of these out as soon as my local dealer gets one.

Obviously this is PriusChat so opinions will bias the Prius. I do welcome the competition though, especially from Honda. Toyota and Honda are probably the two best manufactures for mass produced affordable reliable cars.

Well ... many of us have laughed at earlier Honda hybrid offerings touted as Prius killers. Deservely, we laughed at 'em. Competition is good. Is the Accord plug-in's rumered greatness what it takes to move Toyota onto better things? Or (if early bragging is true) will Toyota simply move over. Time will tell. Hopefully Toyota will be able to match any honda full house with a straight flush.

I, for one, am hoping that it is a true 60 mpg for the New Hybrid Accord. Pushing the envelope and giving Toyota real competition will result in more efficient cars.

Brand loyalty aside, everybody wins in this...

...who is this Gas2 website group anyways?
There was no "about us" link and the reporting seems shall we say opinionated.

The better mpg maybe related just from its more powerful battery/electric motor/higher mpge, so it drives in EV the most often!

In series mode, HAH has 166 hp, 0-60 in 7.9 second, but Camry hybrid's 0-60 in 7.2 sec. I had a test drive of the Camry, it felt faster and definitely quieter than my current 2012 Acura tsx SE.

Coming from a Civic Hybrid with an ailing battery, still under warranty and being totally ignored by Honda, I wouldn't touch this if they were giving them away. I too am very sceptical of the mileage claims.

Because it's the only thing that Honda has right now that genuinely competes with the Prius, and there is a lot of overlap in price. To think that people stick to strictly defined classes when car shopping is silly. Someone looking at an Accord hybrid will certainly consider the hybrid that sets the standard when making their decision. The fact that Honda doesn't currently have a decent Civic hybrid makes this all the more true.

i'm glad that Honda finally entered the competition. We all know that the Honda Civic Hybrid wasn't really a Prius competitor. Kudos to Honda.:)
