It's that time, I just received my first registration renewal. Ouch. $865.62 for 2yr tags.

Now I'm curious. How much does it cost for your registration/tags/plates?

AZ gets you on the car registration. In NJ the car registration is under $100, but the property tax is about 4X. That's a trade I'm willing to make!

yes, we pay an annual 'excise tax'. and, of course, 6.25% sales tax at purchase.

For my 2012 base model here in Ca, the license fee (based on value) was $198. Everybody pays a registration fee of $69, even on older cars with minimum values. My county (Ventura) adds a fee of $9, so the total is $276.00. Around the fourth or fifth year, the value based license fee starts gradually decreasing, down to what is now a minimum of $16, plus the other mentioned fees.

    Yikes!

Oregon is $86/2 years, which is $43/yr.

Even that price is high considering it doesn't cost much to print out a couple stickers and update a DB to show you are good for another 2 years.

I understand AZ property taxes are easy though. I'd drive a hoopty if I resided there, and live in a mansion.

Looks like my property taxes are about 1.5% of appraised value.

The value-base portion of the CA fee is is in lieu of a property tax. The above fees are the total annual taxes for the car.

Nebraska has an annual charge (made up of a bunch of stuff) that is based on the vehicle's age and original price. This car will run me probably almost $300 a year for the next few years. It drops a little bit each year.

Interesting I will have to study Arizona case. In VA we have (1) very high annual car taxes (propery tax on car) based on car blue book value in addition we have (2) new $65/yr hybrid fee and (3) lesser annual registration fees.

Re: Item#1- A typical north VA tax rate (per year) is 5% with 50% exclusion below $20,000 so we are easily talking up to $1000 first year tax rate on a new vehcile but it will slowly decline each year with car depreciation. That's not including the other hybrid fees and registration fees noted above, nor sales tax 4% on the car.

On the one hand it just means we spread out property taxes between home+car, but the way it works out I believe we probably have the highest tax disincentive for hybrids.

    I assume equivalent to purchase.
Our annual "car tax" by law is charged to any person who keeps a car parked in a VA locality, so that you cannot legally register out-of-state to escape the car tax.

I think we are talking more about the reoccurring/yearly fees.

Actually, those numbers are the annual fee; in this case, for the first year, when the value of the car is the highest.

In the end CA is a like VA, except that CA has high sales tax (~9%) and thereafter a bit lesser annual tax on car value. VA has low sales tax (4%) but higher annual car tax on car value. Depending on vehicle, overall taxes may be higher or lower in VA vs. CA. Maine is similar to VA, without the hybrid fee, and instead of blue book car value they just take a declining % of MSRP. I estimate north VA 10-year cumulative car taxes + fees will range from 15-20% for a Toyota hybrid. I have to study AZ but sounds like we can put AZ in the expensive car tax category.

Below is a incomplete "state car tax" list prepared a few years ago by another on-line community. We should add AZ, CA, and Maine to the grouping with "property tax". Many states do not actually call it "property tax" but if you're paying an annual fee based on vehicle value, that's a property tax. One way you can know, that portion of car tax is Federal tax deductible on FORM 1040 Sched A.

This is all great info, thanks! I also should add that there was approx. 9.1% AZ sales tax on the purchase price too. But all told, I'm quite happy to see 2200 miles of 999mpg on my MID!

So I calculated the Arizona annual car tax is ~9% over 10-yrs so your total 10-yr car tax is sales tax + car tax = 18%. That's in the running for the highest car taxes!...with the new hybrid fee some north VA towns may approach 19-20%.

PS- The other thing I might add, re: Hybrid fees, those of us paying 15%+ total car taxes, that's at least $600 more tax on a hybrid (10-yr ownership) vs. non-hybrid assuming $4000 cost difference at the dealer. Adding additional taxes/fees on to the hybrid owner like VA does not seem warranted.

That is indeed the case in CA. Per my tax advisor, the fixed registration fee part is not deductible, but the value-based license fee is.
