To those who've researched this topic, is there a full leather steering wheel upgrade, similar to the Piano black option that many have installed, but without the wood? There is one on Ebay (search Tom's Prius steering wheel). It's really nice, full leather, with blue stitching to boot, but it's ridiculously expensive! Cheaper suggestions would be appreciated.

I like that one in Garm's thread. It would be nice if Toyota would sell the persona steering wheel on the side similar to the way they sell the Plus parts. I don't want too sporty of a steering wheel on the Prius.. seems a little out of place for me.

I'll sell you mine (prius 4 - SoftTex lined similar to Persona series - dark grey) once I swap out. Interested? :)

There is a stock 2010 leather take-off on eBay right now... $160... I would have snapped it up if the wife had not just picked up a new one in Japan, just this week for $250.

My only rationalization is that mine is black (his appears to be grey) and mine is "brand new" .... uh, heavily used. I wonder if U.S. Customs is working through the Fed Gov't shut down?

Pictures on that ebay listing look horrible. Looks like the it came from a car that was completely flooded.. has dirt all over it.

Wow! You've a good eye! Can you tell which flood? Sandy? Katrina? Something Biblical?

Seriously, you may have a point... maybe ask the seller for clarification and better pictures?

Also, the best price I found online, new, here in the States was around $450.

No point in getting the OEM leather steering wheel when the aftermarket ones are much more substantial, better quality and usually cheaper.

The Ebay seller is from Sacramento. No floods there that I've heard about... Yes, the car could've come from another flood-prone state. If the seller migrated to California and took the flooded car with him, why the heck would he chose Sacramento!? I don't think flooding is a reasonable conclusion.

I'll post a picture of how my JDM aftermarket leather and (fake?) wood wheel cracked in several places... albeit in our somewhat less than balmy Maine winters.

You don't like the stock leather wheel on your V (Five)?

Maybe not from a flooded car but it looks just like the flooded cars I have seen that get covered in muddy water. Could be just an extremely dirty owner, its supposedly from a low mileage car. I'd hate to "upgrade" my 2013 with that steering wheel!

My stock leather wheel also had a factory defect, a minor variation of a previously reported defect. I don't know if Maine winters are a contributing factor, but you most likely had a dud (as did I with my stock steering wheel).

The vast majority of stock and aftermarket wheels are defect-free so those isolated incidents mean nothing. However, comparing the two, aftermarket JDM steering wheels are thicker, heavier, softer to the touch (in leather area) and have deep finger indentations compared to stock leather steering wheel. At $200 or so (for the piano black version), JDM is the way to go as an upgrade.

Does the fake shiny wood of the piano black wheel get scratched up after a while? That's one of the reasons I'm looking for an all-leather version. Also, Garm's pictures make it seem as though the wheel is gray, but this attached picture of the apparent same wheel suggests black. Anyone know for sure?

It's the lighting. The wheel is only a shade darker than the center airbag cover.

The piano black wood is a dust magnet for sure. Fingerprints haven't been too much of a problem for me and I'm not getting scratches other than microscratches that all black finishes seem to have.

Ok good. So just to be sure, is the center airbag cover the same color across all cars? My interior is the dark charcoal gray, as opposed to light gray.

They all use the same color dark charcoal gray stock wheel with the exception of the Persona, which has red contrasting stitching and dark chrome trim. Speaking of which, those with the Persona can easily upgrade to the all leather JDM wheel with red stitching.

OK final question, while my new wheel is bring shipped to me, how is it that some have had their wheel be off center? I am going to have my Toyota dealer install it, but was curious whether there were any tips to avoid having issues with alignment after the install. It'll be a bummer to have to pay extra for realignment or have a permanently off-balance wheel.
