Is Toyota 0W-20 Full Synthetic?

If it's 0W20, meets the grade spec, then the "best" is the cheapest, most convenient to buy. For me that's Toyota's oil.

Close but not quite. SAE viscosity standard has a range. Look it up.

 

That's what the 0w-20 is, multigrade. 2 different brands of 0w-20 oil will not differ in viscosity.

Nope. SAE 20 is 5.6-9.3 cSt @100c. This is a huge range of viscosity.

No one is debating there is a range. But that range doesn't change in the same SAE rating from brand to brand, which is what was being discussed.

Where's your data on that? You are going to have to prove it before anyone will believe you. Sounds like you are just talking out of your butt, quite frankly.

If for example a Mobile 1 brand 0w-20 oil proves to have a different viscosity range than say the Toyota brand (or any brand) 0w-20 oil, then one of them is not within the SAE 0w-20 standard.

 

And for those reading, SAE 0W-20 means it has an SAE viscosity rating of 0 in cold temperatures and a rating of 20 at normal operating temperature. Any oil which deviates from this cannot be certificated an SAE 0W-20 oil.

 

So after reading this thread I have no idea who or what to trust. So change your oil often may still be your best insurance. I will change my oil often and hope it is good oil at the dealer. Every 3rd oil change is Mobil 1.

Every third oil change is Mobil 1? Its not a treatment. It won't fix dino oil issues.

Your 100 times better running Mobil 1 10,000 oci than you are changing dino oil every 3000 miles.

I take that back. Your better off running mobil 1 20,000 than dino every 3,000 miles.

 

Why are we even talking about dino oil? The Prius spec 0w-20 oil only comes as a synthetic.

 

You must be joking. If I drive 20k on oil it would be over 2 years old with thousands of short trips. My oil gets contaminated with engine carbons, as does every engine. if you dont drive but 5 miles or less on most trips before letting engine cool off your oil will become bad. If you dont change your oil when it is dirty you are doing your engine no favors. IMO change oil before it gets to dark. if your oil at 5K is nearly clear keep running it. I would be shocked to see oil at 20k that was still clear. I guess if it still looks clean it might be OK. but chemicals get in your oil from the combustion of gas, these eat at gaskets and seals. I will change my oil more often.

In my car the engine often is running cold and I think that causes more problems with oil. Not that the oil wears out just that is gets dirty. I may have a different opinion if I drove 40k a year. I think I will run mobil 0-20 and change it every 5k it cost 6.79 a Quart at bi-mart. less than 28 dollars another 6 or so for filter so less than 35 dollars so if I do this it will cost me $140 for 20k instead of doing once for $35 only about 500 difference for 100K I think it is worth it. For me that is about 10 years!

 

Synthetic oil has one common feature regardless of brand: within a hundred miles or so, it turns opaque and looks battleship grey. All synthetic oil does this, and looks "dirty". It's not dirty.

 

I just checked my oil yesterday. The oil is almost transparent it has just a little color like honey but much tinner. I have 800 miles on the new car. ? I believe it comes with synthetic oil, the cap says 0-20 only. I think the only 0-20 I have been able to find was synthetic. Yet my oil is still clear, not opaque at all.

My engine is new, so I believe the oil is clear because the oil is still clean. once the engine has some miles on it the oil will be a little dirty after changing it due to a little old oil still in engine.

I am not an expert on synthetic oil, however I use it in my 06 ford superduty v10. It also uses a light weight I think it is 5-20 oil. I have never noticed it being Opaque. I just watch and when it gets dark I change it. I have also used synthetic in my honda generator and it is still clear at the end of each year when I change it. it may be because I don't usually use my generator lots. on average 20hrs with some years 5 times that.

So if your oil is grey it's not dirty but if it is dark brown or worse black it is! IMHO don't extend oil change to much if you want your engine to last 200-300k. I think it will start leaking because of seal breakdown and everything else will be worn out.

 

I'm done here. Obviously I'm wasting my time if simple concepts are hard to understand.

No I'm not joking. Up against dealer vat oil I'll take M1 anyday.

 

Used M1 since 1980 and never seen battleship gray before. In fact in my Prius it stays pretty clean for about 2000 miles.
