    Big Sur and Hurst Castle would be an awesome destination if it's not too far off your initial route. Those are some must see places. When I rode my motorcycle I would occasionally hit those destinations. I had a crotch rocket, so the drive out there sucked, but once there it was all worth it. My usual stomping grounds was the hills near Santa Cruz. The coast of California and Oregon are just among the most beautiful places on the West Coast.

    We did not stop at the Hearst Castle as we been there before.
    We spotted our 2 nd C after some 2000 miles. It was today in a place called Marina California. About 9 am at a corner of 2 nd street and I don't know. Silver grey. was that one of us????
    Someone mentioned preferring Zion. I only visited Zion, Yellowstone and Joshua Tree. (So far). My favorite was Yellowstone as it is truly impressive. image.jpg

    This trip has been better than expected. Yes we drove up the coast from Morro to Monterey on route 1. We stopped at several beaches including one of our favorites, Moonstone Beach in Cambria.

    Part 8: Monterey to Elk California : 472 kilometers at 4.4 or 53.5 mpg
    Part 9: Elk Ca to Gold Beach, Or: 495 kilometers @ 4.7 or 50 mpg
    Note: when I was leaving the hotel parking lot in Monterey, I found another C parked right beside me. It was a dark grey with California plates. I took a picture but I won't post as the C had unique decals on the rear window and I don't want to post unless I have the owners permission. Was it one of us?

    Some observations
    The state with the best roads on the trip: Utah with Nevada a close 2nd
    The worst: California
    The state with the most encounters of maniac drivers: California. I thought the worst were in France or in Montreal but California takes the prize.

    Hope you enjoyed Oregon.

    I love this State.

    Be careful driving up the coast on highway 101. Every little city on the route is basically a speed trap. I know from unfortunate experience that they will ticket you.

    I had a friendly Oregon Police Officer that seemed to be taking a bit of extra delight in ticketing a Prius.

    I may have a little too much Oregon pride, but as far as city's go, I think Portland is a wonderful size. Just big enough to offer all the sophisticated entertainment options of any big city, but still small enough to be a beautiful city.

    I would recommend a trip up the Columbia River Gorge, take the older scenic highway. Several beautiful waterfalls that can be seen and accessed easily. Of course Multnomah Falls is the Queen, but some of the other spots on the way that some people miss, are fantastically beautiful.

    Part 10: Gold Beach OR to Portland: 492 kilometers at 4.4 l per 100 k or 53.5 mpg. A beautiful drive up the coast on 101 for a bit then across to I-5. We spotted an Orange C on 5 this afternoon. Lady driver. Gave her a thumbs up but she was paying attention to the road. Incredibly, I have not spotted many C's on our trip to date that now totals some 7,000 kilometers through 8 states (and Idaho twice).

    The Oregon coast was beautiful and we were quite impressed with Portland and area (we are staying in Jantzen Beach). We took a little ride in the city this afternoon after the marathon and it is indeed a nice city. We will be traveling to Spokane in the morning via the Columbia River route. This is our last trip before driving home on Monday morning.

    Sounds like you had a great trip. Wish you had hit Oregon when it wasn't raining...but that can be somewhat difficult to do in September.

    Most folks purchase a C for city driving! The c really shows its colors down town. You did well however for speed limit travel! Did you find the c to be a comfortable auto for your trip? H

    PS. We normally drive in a small town area however we do take occasional trips to Spokane. We decided to take this trip on a whim and we are very happy that we did. We arrived home this afternoon. I will post a final report in a few days once I revover.

    We managed to dodge most of the rain. Most of our stay in your fair city was under sun and clouds. I love any city that has streetcars. It reminds me of my childhood in Montreal.
