I was out last night having dinner with a friend at BJ's in Huntington Beach. At the close of dinner, I walk back to my car to find a note in my driver door saying "I'm so sorry. It was dark and I couldn't see you car. I backed up on it and hit your passenger bumper." Luckily it's not too bad and is around $2000 to fix and the deductible is refundable. Sucks for this to happen to a brand new car.

Doesn't look like any sheet metal damage, it'll be fine when fixed. Consider it accident proof now. ;)

Is the paint surface broken? Is the rear hatch damaged? Is there any deformity of the bumper cover or the rear hatch? If not, try buffing it out with a high quality surface cleaning car wax. Even if the bumper cover is damaged, it doesn't cost anywhere near $2,000 to repaint a Prius bumper cover even at today's inflated body shop prices. I've had way too much experience with similar damage on multiple cars in the past year.

The paint surface is broken for sure. I thought they were scuff marks until I ran my hand over it. They are pretty deep scars. Also, the bottom of the passenger brake light is scratched/broken and to the right of that on the quarter panel is a pretty good dent.

Yes she left her number and was actually very nice and helpful with the situation.

So none of this was anything that was your fault?
And the offending party is taking responsibility?

If that's the case don't do anything. Just let the insurance company pay, and have a professional restore or replace the bumper.

$2000 dollars does seem high BUT about 1 month into owning my at the time brand new Honda Fit, somebody rear ended my Fit. Visibly the damage seemed less than what I see in your pictures. There literally was just the faintest imprint of the other persons license plate screws in the back of a barely, barely scuffed and perhaps slightly dented bumper.

Long story short, once the bumper was removed, everything inspected it came to $1000 to repair the bumper. So I know body shop and paint work can really add up fast.

But anyway, your lucky the person was honest enough and responsible enough to take responsibility. But since it's a new car, and there is IMO some pretty significant at least cosmetic damage, I certainly wouldn't try to fix it myself. Just have it restored to like new condition.

Yes I'm not going to do anything myself. I have to pay the deductible of $500 but that will be refunded back to me when my insurance collects the money from the driver at fault insurance.

The actual cost of the repairs is $1882.76. Upon inspection, these are the results.

    1. Replace RT Tail Lamp Assemble
    2. Repair RT Quarter Panel and paint
    3. Repair Bumper Cover and paint
    4. Repair Quarter Panel Protector
    5. Replace Quarter Glass
    6. Replace Flex Additive - Not sure what that is
    7. Repair Tint Color

From all my research, this collision shop seems to be very good.
Luckily once all of this is complete, I wont have a pay a penny.

    Well good luck.
I also know it's a bummer to have a new vehicle and an early issue, even if it isn't your fault.

Glad you are haveing a happy ending, we try to park at a far end of a parking lot away from everybody. About 50% of the time there is a nice car parked next to ours when we get out.

Wow! Obviously far more damage than your photos show. The "Flex Adhesive" is added to paint to allow plastic parts like a bumper to absorb impacts without the paint cracking - VERY important and something body shops sometimes leave out.

Funny part about your comment is that I do the same thing. I actually parked two stores away from the restaurant by myself and someone still hit me. Crazy I tell you.

If I wake up in the morning to find parts missing from my v, I'll know who did it.
Once I was parked in my jeep in the middle of a pasture with literally 100 acres of space all around me. You guessed it, I got run into by the only other vehicle on the property.

I always park my pickup truck WAY out on the edge of the parking lots. For one thing, the extra exercise won't hurt me. Last year I traded in a 97 F150 that didn't have a single parking lot ding. My 2009 F150 still looks new. My bride parks her Lexus as close as she can. We pick up her new v5 tomorrow. Hopefully, she will change her bad habits.

Now, back to the OP, it's wonderful that the culprit 'fessed up and took responsibility. A friend of my parents once came out and saw a dent in the side of their new car. They were relieved to find a note tucked under the wiper, until they read it:

"Hello, I am so sorry that I hit your new car. It was an accident. I feel very badly about. All the witnesses see me writing this note and assume that I am leaving my name and phone number for you to call me........ I'm not."

The original poster really lucked out.

Case in point, last month I was hit and run on the freeway, my car was totaled, I could have been killed (lucky for me I was not even injured), and they never caught the other person.

On the plus side, this led me to buying my Prius which I am very happy with.
