I have always told everyone that it is asphalt all the way to Fairbanks except where it is not! :p

Make sure the spray is bear sized, not human-self-defense sized, and label for bear, not for humans. Canadian border officers won't allow anything that is intended for defense against 2-legged predators.
Gun? Traveling in Canada? What are you smoking?

Fuzzy being from Washington State you probaly more versed on gun Laws in Canada than I. Perhaps the message is be prepared and legal for whatever comes at you

Don't take a gun for protection while traveling through Canada, it isn't legal. There are legal ways to prearrange to take one to a hunt, or to a sanctioned pistol match, but they won't fit into OP's itinerary and still won't be useful for protection.

Bear spray is well accepted if one is planning to hike in or near bear territory. Grizzlies are common enough to not need EPA protection as down here.

    Thanks, Peter!
I am an ex-teacher, but only here in Virginia.
Going airborne in a Prius doesn't sound like fun, especially the landing part!
The planned time frame is June-July 2014. Expect lots of bad road and construction?
Two spare tires, check! (Where to stow the second one?)
Gallon of Slime and an air pump, check!
Ditch cell phone and bring my old Boy Scout semaphore flags, check! (Learn how to semaphore "SOS", check!)
Slingshot for killing rabbits and eating them raw, check! (Canadian Customs are death on handguns and I've already had them disassemble one of my cars.) seriously, what kind of SMALL game is there up there? (Slingshot and most firearms just irritate grizzlies, I suspect.)

And last but not least, psychiatric evaluation for even considering this, check!

Our car is new this year and hate to have it chewed up by sand and grit! Was the damage mostly in front? Do you think a "bra" in front would prevent most of the damage? Or a plastic sheet type of protection?

Well, although bear spray is accepted in Canada, the tiny thumb-sized pepper spray used by joggers was apparently classified as a deadly weapon. Hence my car was disassembled, a rather unpleasant experience!
Glad grizzlies are not protected by the EPA! (The Mounties are enough protection I'm sure!)
Am taking economy-sized bear spray, for sure, so thanks!

I have been up to Alaska three times, don't worry to much , things will be fine. I have never had a flat going up and back frrom Alaska, but two tires is a good Idea and a repaire kit, Plugs and pump, do not use slime! The road is really all asphalt except where they are fixing the roads and fixing yearly ice heaves. Watch really close as the repairs can come up kinda quick! They do have a lot of spring repairs lots of asphalt then 20 feet gravel then more asphalt then more 20 feet of gravel , you get the idea. If you want there are plenty of motels all the way, just use the mile post book it tells you everything you need to know check on line and see what they have to offer, I feel it is the most important thing to take with you, you will under stand when you get going.
I used a bra, but didn't really like it seemed like dirt gets behing it then kinda rubs the paint. If I was going again I think I woud try the clear protective on the front. I have had that on my last two cars really like it but, I have not been to Alaska with them. Don't worry two much about rocks and so forth not very much traffic out on the hwy just in town. Hug the right side as you meet someone just be cautious.

You are going to a wonderfull trip! Wish I was going with! Enjoy!

Mostly front but sides also hit hard. The car just looked old. Bra may help but you will get that sand blast effect on the car

    Keep us posted!
I'm thinking a separate thread when you launch updated as often as you can. That will give us a good idea of where to start looking if you go off the grid for a few months.

Everybody has already hit the high points, and it sounds like you've been to the frozen North before.
Definately prioritize the spare tire upgrade. You may want to consider throwing away the doughnut and putting a Corolla rim/tire into the spare tire well if it will fit at all. You may want to bolt it to a hitch carrier in the rear of the car if it won't. Fortunately, the G3 is an economical car (which was the whole point) so you probably won't have to lug extra fuel. It's going to be uncomfortable cold, but not deadly kind of cold so you'll be fine for a few hours if your car goes Tango-Uniform. Take a look at your roadside emergency kit and ensure you have all the basics...in case you have to do self aid...or even render aid.
    Just think of it....
Camouflage painted, truck nutz adorned Dodge 4x4 Dually gets roadside assistance from a Prius! :D

TWO cases of bug spray. They're not kidding!!!

    Pictures and Posts, please.

    Good Luck!

You might want to take window washing supplies. Here's a car we saw at Denali in July:

robert, that is the best timeframe to visit... better favoring june. it is the driest month and generally the least smoke from forest fires. skeeters will be bad though.
    perhaps we can meet up?

Excuse my question, but what is a Skeeter?

Is a Frost Heave and levy a hole or raised earth that is impassable by car? I googled it but how much can this be a Problem on this road?

Also pepper spray on a 800 Lb hungry man eater. Lets hope you never have that situation.

    Extra windshield washing fluid, check!

Would those extra gas cans really be necessary for a Gen 3 Prius? We get 55 mpg on trips and have an effective range of 500 miles if we're careful. Kind of hate to carry gasoline in external containers. Are there "distance to next gas" warnings en route, or would Milepost book have that info?

Those guys were heading deep into Denali National Park, where there's a 92-mile dead-end road (with a few side roads) and no gas stations at all.

I feel like the doubting Thomas. I have had current travel guides that show gas stations only to discover they have been out of business.

Maybe a 4runner with external gas can is the preferred vehicle. Sure you're not embracing the inner Yellowstone?

I will certainly post as the plans and preparation for this trip are completed, and try to post pics on the road for those who are interested (possibly on our travel website 'Welcome to Wanderungs.com - our walking website!"'). If you are in the area as we swing by, we would love to pause and chat a bit! Thanks for the info.

    Insect repellant, double check!
Wait, maybe the bear pepper spray will work for the skeeters?
