I have always wondered what is the proper way to calculate what % of your driving is highway vs city.
The answer depends on the question. Are you interested in fuel economy ? If so then use fraction of miles in the city and fraction of miles not.
Considering this is posted in the "Fuel Economy" section of the forum, it's a pretty safe assumption that I'm talking about MPG.
Considering I answered your question with fuel economy as the example, the point of your post was what exactly ? Why don't you just appreciate a little bit that a stranger took the time to answer your question rather than gripe over nothing ? With a bit of effort I can ferret out which sub-forum a thread is posted in, but I typically do not know because I reach the thread from scanning the 'new' activity on PriusChat.
I pretty much estimate or take an educated guess. Most of my driving is on roads with speed limits from 40 - 55 mph, but I have a lot of lights on my commute. Unless I go on long trip, I leave my driving split at 50/50.
I do appreciate your response. My response was in regards to your question "Are you interested in fuel economy?" I'm really not sure why you feel the need to be snarky by implying that I'm not being appreciative of your response, but I'll just leave that conversation here. It seems like lately every time I pay a visit to these forums I run into a "veteran" as yourself who is ruining the sense of community, which is the reason I joined in the first place.
Please realize that this is a forum populated from people the world over, and we do not all use the same vernacular of English. When I write "if you are interested in fuel economy," I am not questioning your dedication or personalizing my post in any way, I am simply giving context to my answer. The snark was all yours. Carry on, I'm done here.
Anything above 50 mph is Highway and over 15 minutes. All the rest is City. It comes from the EPA test speed limits. Bob Wilson
Go to fuelly web siteand under tips, there is a subject for calculating city vs. hwy percentage. Formula is Hwy percentage = 100 * (Avg speed-21)/(27)
