Stealth mode max speed?

    Hello. I'm a longtime Prius owner starting with a 2007. Currently have a 2010 model V (not the wagon, the trim level with ATP). The maximum stealth mode speed (i.e. ICE not turning over) is about 46MPH. The maximum stealth mode speed for my old 2007 was 42MPH.

    I just bought a 2012 Prius c as my commuting car. What is the maximum stealth mode speed of this puppy? Thanks!

    I've gotten 46 while rolling downhill with no glide, but no more.

    On a flat service with no wind, snow and summer tires I can keep it closs to 70 Kmph. Anything over that the ICE always kicks in.

    The Toyota published data lists 46 mph are top speed in stealth mode. Like others have said I have maintained 46 mph on a long downgrade.

    It's easy to coast in one of these. Just make sure the motor's off before shifting to N and it should stay off (I have the "Two" model - it has a regular shifter). You can go significantly faster than 46mph - try 60+ if the hill is big enough. The 1st generation Prius manual specifically mentioned shifting between drive and neutral at any speed.

    On level ground, the torque for the electric motor starts to drop off around 35mph. It's a lot less than the other Prius models due to the 144v HV battery pack. Don't be afraid to kick the ICE on and using the idle to pull the car - 80mpg is possible doing that if you don't care about speed.

    My only real complaint so far is that EV mode disengages at 10mph when the engine hasn't fully warmed and I really don't like to creep through parking lots to keep the motor from starting for no good reason. 25mph or SoC-dependent would be a much better rule for kicking on the ICE to warm up the catalytic converter. Also, if the motor is running, you can't kill it with the EV button - even while stopped. Only a "reboot" does that.

    Challenge - try to get a 100/100 ECO score, even for an instant. I've seen it briefly. I've also achieved 74 mpg on a 60-mile commute. 72.4 over that distance was my best in the 2001 Prius (still running fine at 207k, but looking for a new home).

    Aren't you going to overspeed MG1 by doing that?

    Personally I never use N, ever. The ICE starts up for a reason once you go over the threshold.

    On my c the threshold speed is between 76 and 77 km/h (around 47 mph).

    Once the car is in neutral, the state of the ICE - running or not - will not change. There is a possibility of over revving MG1 on a long or steep down hill if you put the car into N with the engine not turning and the car accelerates in the glide to speeds that will over rev MG1 without the engine on.

    That is the consensus. General advice is never put the car in neutral under 46mph and allow the car to accelerate faster than 46mph. There is absolutely no reason to do this anyway. During a glide there is no fuel consumption even when the ICE is spinning.

    Learn to use your foot and leave the shifter alone. ;)

    the highest i've seen is 95/100 and that was without a stopping score yet. I'm anxiously waiting for that day I get the 100/100 and hopefully can snap a picture

    It's difficult to say the least, especially when keeping pace with traffic. Here's my best; got it a couple days ago actually.

    Maybe I'm missing the point here, but why would you want to put your C in neutral to coast anyway? It's really not even neutral.. It's got a CVT so it's always engaged regardless.. At least, that's how I understand it.. Placing it in "N" to bypass some of the built in safety measures just to go a bit faster down a hill doesn't sound like it pays long term dividends to me. If you want to go faster just use the gas pedal...

    I personally see use of "N" mode as simply not trusting your ability to use the accelerator pedal to achieve a supposedly perfect glide. I don't take such a purist view of glide perfection in any case... I prefer having the ability to fine tune to the conditions and being able to move in and out of glides with absolute fluidity.
     
  14. I've gotten Start score of 100 and gotten it to stay at 100 with cruise for 6 seconds... after that, the cruise score goes down, even though I'm staying at a steady speed on a flat road. It's confusing... (n)

    I believe it rates your Cruise score on how consistently you hold your throttle position. If you do change amount of throttle, how gentle you go about it, etc. It's not about steady speed but throttle I have found. Smooth and steady changes (no feathering of the throttle) and slow throttle position changes when speeding up or slowing down (YMMV)

    In my Gen II I achieve that everyday.[​IMG]

    Note the speed is 68mpg, no arrows! It's gotten to the point I can feel by the seat of my pants the mode I am in!I would think a "c" with an experienced hypermiler behind the wheel could duplicate this!

    I'm not quite sure what you're getting at here. I'm assuming you're not talking about the ECO Score, because the liftback Prius (of any generation) does not have an ECO Score.

    From what I can gather, the Energy Monitor display on the c is programmed differently and does not seem to be capable of "no arrows" while in motion. We do, however, have the HSI (as visible in steveoknievo's post earlier) and getting the HSI to appear in a similar fashion while moving - ie. with no indication in either the blue or green areas, because it's right in the middle - is not that difficult and comes naturally after awhile.

    This said I'm not quite sure if you're suggesting you have your ICE on or off at this stage.

    I think what he's suggesting is that he is truly in a "glide" stage in that photo. No arrows indicating a power distribution from one way or another (using energy to go, or gaining energy from going). The Prius C is capable of the same type of scenario**, I tried it this morning on my way to work just to see if I could accomplish the same type of deal. (I normally don't drive with that screen on, I use the Trip Information screen but after seeing his photo I wanted to experiment with it.)

    **I understand Rob isn't stateside so it may be different. Here in the states, my Prius C is capable of such a screen while in motion, I tried it around 40-45 MPH not 68MPH as shown in the liftback earlier.

    I can't stand that screen. I put it on briefly for new passengers to "ooh" and "aaah" at, then bring the HSI back.
