$64k question? Funny you put it that way as it has been answered already. Yes they can, and have done so with a $64k car (after tax credit);-)

True, it is a luxury car with performance and styling of a luxury car.
Batteries continue to improve, yes it is at a slower pace, but about 25% over 3 years.

Toyota seems to be shutting down plans for EVs, but in 4 years Tesla is planning on a mid $30ks sedan (expecting no federal rebates).

The estimates I have seen for the battery pack weight in the 85kWh battery pack is 1000-1200lbs.

If you put a 1000 lb battery in a car like Prius, that would increase the weight by about 33%. Right now, the weight of the gas in a full gas tank is about 70 to 75 lbs and that could take you a range of 600 miles. A 1000 lb 85kwh battery probably would have a range of only 200 miles. If Tesla could pull it off and make an affordable EV with good range, Elon must know something about batteries than no one else knew about.

The EPA range of the 85 kWh is 265. I regularly get closer to 300 in the summer, and about 200-210 in the winter.
Elon has pulled off a lot of things many others have called impossible. The third gen sedan is one of the simpler ones as it just relies on a few years of the improvements we have already seen.

I don't think Elon knows anything about batteries not known by many others. He is just doing it where many others are still focused on gas cars.

I don't have enough starting capital to make enough to support a family. Also, trading opportunities don't always come by everyday and there's a good chance that I would miss it. We are talking about trading, not investing. But I do make enough to pay for a few toys and vacations.

Tesla is one of the best trading stocks. The company makes no money at this point. It's all speculative. Elon knows how to get people excited so the stock price will be over-valued. At this high level, you can bet on high fluctuations.

You do realize only a tiny fraction of people that say they trade actually make any money off of it. Are you saying you are that much more talented at it then many "professional" day traders?

It is true that it's very hard to get rich from trading. However, that isn't my goal. Compared to the high rollers, I don't even show up on the radar. As soon as I make my 3 to 5%, I take my money and run. With Tesla stocks, you could go long or short. Make money in both directions.

Kudo. Some has the nerves to suggest PiP EV miles are useless because you are better off with biking or walking. They think it is better to commute 70 miles with EV at highway speed.

There are reasons to care from manufacturing emission of a huge battery pack that won't be fully utilized.

Wouldn't you need to account for removing the gas engine, gas tank, fuel system, most of the cooling system, oil, etc?

True. Forgot about them. Then we have to account for a bigger motor

    Smaller motor than the engine.
Electric motor are tiny compared to gas engines.
You also take out the exhaust system, 90% of the radiator.

Oh, and if you want the same range in the Prius, you don't need as many batteries.

There is one method that has always worked - Economic pressure. In fact it is the only one that will work.

The price of gas twenty years for now, the reduction in battery costs, and the advantages for "free fuel" for those with some smarts will do the trick.

    jnet = prius_in_pa = Dan Cathy,

You covered your tracks a little better this time, but you can't help keep giving yourself away. See you back soon under another name.

So...you are the ones that my boy told me about. Not surprise that you people are exactly as he described. If you people were salesmen, you look desperate. But I don't think you people are. You just want EV's to get popular so that more charging stations would be installed. I'm confident that most people aren't that dumb to think that EV's and Plug-ins are going to save them money.

LOL....saving me much more than if I bought a regular Prius at the price I bought a PiP for.

Yes, I know. My boy said the government is paying for your cars. That's ok. I'd rather the government pays you than give it away as welfare.
