for those of you with the smart key/push button start, is there a way to step outside the car while the car is on, and lock the doors? I have tried by touching the door handle, and also pushing the lock button on my key, but it doesnt work

I think actually pressing the lock mechanism will work, but I haven't tried it. I'll let you know tonight.

I just figured it wasn't capable of doing so, some sort of feature to keep you from accidentally locking yourself out. It is something I'd like to be able to do though, I run deliveries and am in and out of the vehicle all the time for brief periods and would prefer to not have it drive off on me.

The 3/4 smartkey versions might act differently then the 1/2 version of the car. Even if this was the solution I wouldn't use it, got a smartkey version of the car because I don't always have the free hands to deal with a mechanical key.

right, but how often are you like the car with the system ready? o/p that is. for someone who wants to do this all day long, i don't think there's a solution. if you have the key outside the car, it doesn't want to lock unless it's off. i'm sure there's a reason...

I bypass this by turning off the car, locking it, then enabling remote start.

Roll down the drivers side window. Open the door and exit the car. Close the door. Reach inside and hit the power lock switch and lock the doors. Lift up on the auto-up driver window switch. Pull your arm out of the car before it gets pinched by the closing window.

OK but then you can only open it with the mechanical key right? Or is there some other way I'm missing? Can I damage or wear-out the mechanical key? Can I get a copy of this mechanical key made without buying a new remote so I can use it and not use the emergency key which must not be made to handle continuous use I assume?
Just trying to make sure I do this right and not make a problem for myself which I'm good at! I want to be able to lock the car running because I have dogs and in the summer I sometimes need to run into a store with a dog in the car and I need to keep the air conditioning on :) I with I had checked here before; I always assumed it couldn't be done! The dealer told me the programming couldn't be changed to allow it...

You should still be able to use the unlock button on the fob at this point. You can copy the mechanical key for the doors only. The car will complain about the key not being with the car, so you may need to leave it in the car and use your spare.

No the remote will not unlock the car you need to use the mechanical key... For some reason I was never notified someone responded to my post that's why this is late! If anyone found a way to unlock without using the mechanical key let me know! :)
Can I just go to a regular key maker for another mechanical key? I never tried but if I can get one I'll post so everyone knows!

You can not wear out the mechanical key. I'm pretty sure cars that do not offer remote unlock(older vehicles) are still running just fine with the manual lock/unlock. You could look into an after market alarm system that could offer this. But I don't think I have seen one.

Both the key and the cylinder that the key fits into CAN wear out over time. But it takes a while. My Saturn key lasted me 12 years before I had to move to the spare... granted, they made their keys out of brass. The ignition cylinder on my '73 VW Bug had to be replaced recently, it was totally worn out and I could remove the key while the car was running.

Lol, 12 years is a long time. And also that 40 year old bug as well. I think those held up pretty well. My point was that it will last a while and whippet1 shouldn't worry about it going out anytime soon. Hopefully everyone knows/understands anything mechanical can wear out over time. If used with care it will last longer.
