Ok so I have had my first Prius Liftback for 3 months now I avg 56mpg (49 mpg when Wife drives it!!) I like a drug addict I feel strange not to go get gas anymore!!! Last month total my gas bill was $119 for the Prius and a Mazda CX-5, It just feels weird not to go get gas we have been trained for so long with these old gas suckers that suck the tank dry in 2 days. Why did I not get one sooner?

I was driving a Honda Element AWD 22mpg and a Rav4 AWD 24.5mpg now we have a CX-5 fwd getting 33-35mpg and the Pruis at 56mpg now the worst gas burner I have is my lawn tractor!! I have friends with SUV's spending $400-500 month in fuel...........

What have you done to lose the old gas sucker?

I went from a Honda Civic Si to the prius c. Even when using good driving habits I was getting 36-38 mpg average with it. But it took premium so there went any savings paying around $0.50 more per gallon. I too now get around 56 with a full fill up of $28. I love the difference but I miss the horses. Have less than half now but don't need em.

My grocery store gives me gas discount and I could buy up to 30 gallons. I would go fill up the Prius and 4 to 5 gas containers. My last discount was 90 cents off per gallon. With 30 gallons of gas, I won't have to visit the gas station for the next 30 days. My bill is little bit less than yours. I only average about a gallon of gas gas per day including weekends.

Yeah, you should check out to see if stores around your area would give you gas discounts. For every 100 points, I get 10 cents discount. In many cases, certain items could get you extra points. Two weeks ago, I purchased some ribs and I got extra 50 points. In one case, if I buy $100 or more worth of grocery, I get an extra 200 points. These "extra point" offers don't happen all the time so you'll have to keep an eye on the flyers.

If by "weird" you mean "Fantastic" then I agree....

I'm coming from a Honda Fit...which got relatively good gas mileage, not a gas guzzler, if not a hybrid. And still I really enjoy reaching 300 miles on a tank, and not even really having to think about filling up.

I was lucky if I got 270-280 miles per tank on my Honda Fit, and on The Prius that isn't even warming up to the point where I need to start thinking about filling up.

I love not having to fill up as often, I don't drive a lot of miles on my car every month, but I fill up my wife's Venza usually twice before I fill up the Prius and it has a smaller tank. Longest I have gone is about 5 weeks between fill ups.
So my monthly bill on the Prius is about $35, hard to beat that.
And since I got in on the first $1000 Gas promotion from HSN I am still driving free since Oct 17, 2012!!!

By the way, I don't want to start a long debate here. But I see you use the term gas guzzler to describe a car. Gas guzzler is a type person, not a type of car. I have read messages here on Priuschat that some people drive over a 100 miles a day on the Prius. That is over 2 gallons of gas per day. I personally know SUV drivers who only use 1 gallon of gas or less a day. Who's the gas guzzler now? I myself drive a Prius and use about 1 gallon of gas a day. So I'm guzzling about the same amount of gas as some SUV drivers.

We went from being a two-mini-van family to one-mini-van and one-Prius. And the Prius does 75% of our miles. We did this in 2006. I like wagons, minivans, and now liftbacks because I always want a practical car I can stuff and go on trip. Prius v is like drooling over for me.

    Personally?

I've had gas. I've passed gas. I've been gassed.

    I never have guzzled gas.

Therefore I'm more than perfectly happy to use the term "Gas Guzzler" to describe a car.

I think the term Gas Guzzler IS commonly used in reference to the MPG a vehicle can obtain.

The fact that someone may have a "Gas Guzzler" of an automobile, but not drive it much doesn't IMO change the definition of the vehicle. If you own a vehicle that only get's for example 12 mpg, that's a gas guzzler of an automobile. The fact that you may only be driving it 2 miles a week, doesn't make it less of a gas guzzler, just a gas guzzler that is being used less.

Conversely, you may have someone that IS putting high miles on a Prius daily, weekly, monthly...that doesn't make The Prius a gas guzzler...just a very MPG efficient vehicle being used heavily.

If you have the need to drive high miles, and have chosen a Prius? Good for you. I'm not going to call you a "Gas Guzzler", I'm going to applaud you for being as efficient as possible.

Conversely, having a paperweight of a 8 cylinder SUV doesn't make that SUV suddenly more economical, just far less used.

A Prius driver that uses 2 gallon of gas a day should get a pat on the back for driving a Prius while a SUV driver that only use one gallon of gas a day is considered environmentally irresponsible. Sure, that make a lot of sense. And all these time, I thought we were aiming at using less gas. My mistake.

I'm talking about application of the term "Gas Guzzler". I apply it to cars in relationship to their MPG capabilities.

    END OF STORY.

Yeah, I'll pat someone on the back that has a lot of driving to do, long commute or otherwise- that chooses a Prius.

Some of us don't have the luxury of parking a huge SUV and NOT driving it. Some of us need our automobiles as a legitimate means of transportation. And bottom line, from point A to point B...being equal, The Prius will use less gas, than the typical "Gas Guzzler".

That's kind of obvious isn't it?

My Gen 2 Prius replaced an 02 Maxima that got a bit more than 1/2 the mileage of my Prius. I still did keep around my former 04 350Z until mid-2011, when I sold it instead of having it shipped back. :/ The Z's mileage was about 1/2 that of the Prius. And, both those cars required premium. The Maxima would tend to ping w/o it and the Z manual had very stern warnings about it being a really bad idea to run w/less than 91 octane.

I recently started leasing a Leaf and it has 815 miles on it so far (had ~39 miles when I got it from having to be dealer traded). My Prius hardly gets driven now (drove it yesterday). Prior to that, I drove it on 8/2/13, IIRC. My last Prius fuel up was on 7/27/13...

It helps that I get free L2 charging at work so I only charge at home on weekends. I need to order a "Prius is my gas guzzler" license plate frame sometime. :D

I guess if I find myself making trips often beyond Leaf's range, my Prius will get driven more... otherwise I'll drive it every now and then to keep the gas from going bad and to keep the tires from developing flat spots.

$400-$500/month in fuel???? Are they nuts? My 2-year lease on a '13 Leaf SV w/QC + LED and premium packages w/no money down (and a Nissan VPP code) is 23 payments of $314/month w/tax and license + $395 disposition fee at the end if I decide to not lease another Nissan or buy the car out. If one got a more lightly equipped model, esp. a S trim, it would be significantly less.

I'm just yanking your chain. I know what you're saying. But you have to understand what I'm trying to say too. Cars aren't gas guzzlers when they not moving. People are the ones that made them move. Likewise, a van carrying 7 people isn't a gas guzzler when compare to a Prius carrying only the driver. A city bus that get 4 mpg isn't a gas guzzler when it's carrying 55 people. Like I said, I wasn't trying to start an argument, just want people to view things a different way. mpg isn't the only thing that we should look at.
