Considering Buying a PiP... Please Check My Math

Also, don't discount the amazing feeling of zooming around silently for a few miles every day. It's like having the fun of a real electric car, but without the bleeding edge issues (range, cost, etc). It's SUCH a good and unexpected feeling. For me this is easily worth $3000 over the 10 to 15 years I'll probably own it.

I LOVE pulling into an out of my garage - which is connected to my house - with zero exhaust smell.

I didn't expect to love it this much. It makes me want a Tesla big time. Too bad I don't have $100K lying around.

 

Just remember, you came here looking for opinions related to a financial decision. If PiP is a toy to you, then you should just buy it. If not, you need to calculated based on your driving habit, do you really need a PiP and pay the higher premium. You may not even want a hybrid. The government has a web site with a calculator helping you to make decision about EV's.

Exactly. I have a long commute as well, and if I could plug in at work, the Volt would have made a much more intriguing option. Without it, I'd have a drive in that was 80 percent EV, but a drive home at lower economy than the Prius. Just didn't work out.

Looks about right and the difference I was seeing
$3,567 but MINUS the 2,500 fd back = just $1,067

 

If I really wanted an EV, I would go buy a Leaf. But since I can't charge at work, I'm not willing to pay the higher premium for an EV. Besides, I've been driving and sat in EV most of my life.

About the same price I paid last October. I also took advantage of TFS's 60 month 0% loan. Which saved me another $1,800.

So Sedition, I presume you saw PeppyPrius post above in MD. There is a little more info in the Price Paid on Pip discussion, sounds like Peppy went to Antwerpen Toyota, which is a little farther away from us. I am thinking that $500 Processing fee is a VA thing possibly absent or much less in MD. From some other recent posters who complained about this fee, I am thinking you might save $500 by trying a MD dealer on the Beltway or Antwerpen.

 

Going on 10 months, now. The novelty has not diminished. If anything, it has magnified. I love it! My next car will either be fully electric or another plug in with a larger battery.

Has there always been this many people commenting in PiP threads that don't own PiP's, or is it new?

(and I mean never intend to get one...people that are thinking about getting one are fine)

 

You are a really great negotiator. You haven't even bought the car yet! I compare your negotiated price ($27690) with mine of ($28720). I paid $1,000 more and bought the car. I waited until the end of the 0% APR period and hoped that I could get a better deal. I signed on Aug 5, which was the last day of the promotion period. I'm still happy with the car even though it looks like I paid an extra $1000.

 

Yes, the dealer processing/doc fee in MD is $200. I wasn't successful negotiating it down though...although I tried. You will pay state taxes in VA, even if you buy a car in MD, but you won't pay twice. I bought a car in Stafford, VA once and only paid MD title tax. Another thing to keep in mind, which I didn't at first, is VA may tax you on the full purchase price, without the rebates/incentives, plus the freight, etc. That is what MD did to me...of course the state that taxes everything is going to be sure to get their's!

Obviously you don't own a PiP. I know I've only had mine for a week, but we also have a Highlander Hybrid...had it for 2 years and it is always fun to see how much gas you can save. The novelty has not worn off yet. I love watching all the jerk faces fly by me in their big ole' gas guzzlers...me all the while knowing I am saving gas. I especially don't mind sitting still on the road in horrible traffic anymore (which I do numerous times a day) because I know that I am not wasting/burning fuel. Saving me $$$ and the environment. Today when I got to work, my average MPG was 166!!
