Perhaps the OP has been overcome by the fumes - let's show some sympathy here.

I agree that this post might have been a troll. But we do sometimes get genuine owners with legitimate problems come here and fall for the mistake of making a somewhat emotive and "ranty" first post. Naturally everybody screams "Troll" and they get upset and never return again. It does happen, I've seen it a few times here.

That is certainly true. However, I have to admit that it takes a lot of self-restraint sometimes to be helpful. A poster who expects a complete answer without providing any useful data is rather hard to help and easy to complain about.

Since the OP is gone and we love to speculate, heres my theory:

The OP decided to lift the floor in the hatchback and found Grandma's ashes and $1,000,000 cash from her estate!! Thats what stunk so bad (the money had been buried in the yard right above the septic and was still a little ripe). Anyways, the OP took the Prius and drove it right to Vegas. They averaged 44.5mpg on the way there (damn a/c and mountains!) and havent been seen since entering The Venetian last Monday. (y) :D

OK everyone, I'm NOT A TROLL. I'm a teacher, former VW mechanic, and parent of a 16 year old girl. The Service Mgr of Toyota Irvine, California really did tell me to drive around with charcoal in the car, and dump the car for a Honda. I now wonder, actually, about this site, and what kind of nut cases are here writing inflammatory comments. As an update, the general manager of the dealership offered to fix the Prius for free after my ex took it there for vent tube replacement, and instead, the service writer smelled the vent (NO KIDDING), and did a front end alignment. They ordered vent tubes, and I'm going to insist on getting the ones off the car, plus I will insist on inspecting the new ones before they're put on because I trust no one there. As for the wierdos that have written strange replies, well, this only confirms the fact I will forever avoid Toyotas, and I'll sell my Prius after it's fixed so I don't pass along a toxic vehicle.

Isn't the act of selling it 'passing it along'?

You may be a former mechanic, teach and parent, but you should familiarize yourself with chat-room etiquette. You don't post something a serious as you did and then not return for two weeks. People here are trying to help you and you made that impossible by not replying to anyone. IT WAS YOUR FIRST AND ONLY POST, and therefore, we thought you were a troll...

You are correct in your assumptions, though. Toyota makes terrible cars and the Service Manager that told you to drive with charcoal and dump the car for a Honda is exactly what all Toyota Service Managers tell their customers. We just like driving unreliable cars and fighting with our mechanics because we know that when we go back and complain, they will not only fix our initial problem for no charge, but throw in an alignment as well!

Is there a way you can test for the chemicals in there? I mean, any odd smell can't be good, esp. if it's making people light-headed. Take to a few different dealers to get multiple opinions. Ask to have them check out the smell and ask if there's anything leaking or touching the battery? (maybe there's a small animal like a mouse that died inside?).

On a lighter note I had a AC leak in my very old Honda Civic that made the carpet moldy and created a damp musty odor. The dealer found the problem and fixed it.

I also recall someone on PC a South Florida person leaving the Sun Roof open at the airport about an inch or 2 and leaving for a trip for a week. It rains every day. On return the car seats had a green slim and vegetation growing on them and stunk. It was a big ordeal.

I don't care if you are a teacher, former VW mechanic and parent of a 16 year old girl, and I don't care if everything you say happened,- happened exactly as you say it happened. You're still being a troll, whether YOU know it or not.

Maybe some of the responses were somewhat extreme, BUT as the OP you are the one setting the tone, with the first post.

You want a more reasonable level of response? Try not naming yourself "Stinky Prius Owner". Then if you have a legitimate concern about battery ventilation, and what to look for? Try calmly asking about those issues. Try to avoid IGNORANT headlines like " Is my Prius Poisioning My Child!"

It's okay to have any questions. It's even okay to be unhappy with your Prius. It's okay to have concerns about the battery and ventilation.

But when you make one very inflammatory post, with ridiculous contentions (true or not) of being told to drive around with charcoal, and purportedly thinking your Prius "killed" someone....in a Prius enthusiast website, then you disappear for 2 weeks, only to return to admonish those that did respond? I'm still calling TROLL LIKE BEHAVIOR.

If you ever were a mechanic, you should understand machines. The Prius has batteries. Those batteries are vented. Is it possible there is a problem with your batteries and/or ventilation? Certainly. Machines can break, batteries can fail...ventilation tubes can clog.

But it is NOT possible that The Prius is designed to vent harmful fumes into the cabin. 99.9% of Prius owners drive them...and never report the condition you are reporting.

If you REALLY have a battery leakage problem, AND a ventilation tube problem...that's too bad. And it sounds like you have taken the vehicle to a crappy service department.

But even IF those problems are legitimate. It's possible to have them fixed. Then if you then want to sell the vehicle...please do.

But don't come to a enthusiast website, basically defining The Prius as a toxic fume venting killing machine, make 1 post, disappear for 2 weeks, then return and pretend to be so offended at the posts that would dare to accuse you of trolling....because real or not, that's trollish behavior.

I think Stinky is a bit sensitive about the issue and agree the second post is an inappropriate reaction. Didn't even bother to thank those who offered genuine advice and assistance. So much for gratitude!
