I attached this from Edmunds.com. It's the "True Cost to Own" table for a 2010 Prius II. Depreciation seems high, as well as Maintenance and Repairs. Can some shed some light on these figures...? What kind of maintenance and repairs would warrant these costs? Surely this is more than just oil changes and replacement filters....

    Thanks!

I'm not sure because I've only done the oil change on my car (a savings of around $80 or so) and the tire rotation which is done at the local Walmart auto for a total of $20. BTW, I've only owned my car for a year.

They are all just estimates. I solely used it as a tool to compare models. I don't expect my actually cost of ownership to mirror the Edmunds or KBB estimate.

Regarding the maintenance, some of the dealer 30k services can be several hundred bucks because you pay for all those "inspections". Maybe not for the Prius in particular, but again, it is an estimate.

Not sure where these numbers came from Maintenance is wrong IMO, Depreciation seems ok but if gas goes to $5 a gallon the Prius will sell at 'name your own price'

On the car insurance I pay $263 for 6 months........... $3 more than my 2010 Honda Element

Please tell me who your insurer is that you can pay $263 for 6 months....! I want to sign up with them...Is that full coverage? I've been calling around all week and Geico was the best at the slightly better than minimum coverage at $66/mo. Traveler's is the highest at $107/mo.

My 07 for instance at 60,000 miles. Bought new:

7 oil changes with Mobil 1
2 Transmission fluid changes Redline D-6
    new engine coolant
    new Inverter Coolant
Wheel bearing under 3/36 but I'll include that for $400
Wet Okole Seat Covers (expensive but worth it still mint 6 years later)
    High End Tint
    Air & ice filters
    Misc oil-cleaners-etc
    New tires

Never bought any of the dealer upscale crap. All in like $2200. over 6 years. Priceless. And $500 of that is the seat covers and tint job. Has been the lowest maintenance car I have ever owned. That Edmunds list is ridiculous.

That's awesome! I Googled Wet Okole Seat Covers, and I like them a lot. I may get me one for the front and back. I have a 70 lbs black lab and sheds and drools quite a bit. What percentage are your tints?

About the only thing on that chart that I agree with, is maybe the depreciation, and arguably it seems a little high too. My full coverage + road trouble insurance is only $351.96 per year. (I am over 50, have a spotless driving record for the last 30 years, no claims, $500 deductible)

You have to read these TCO estimates with a critical eye. Some charges apply, and some do not.

My '04 Prius has a little over 160k miles and I have paid just under 1 penny a mile for repairs/maintenance. That is quite low, about 1/6th of the Edmunds estimate for a car that is twice as old, but keep in mind most of mine is DIY. Details

these numbers are crazy! Insurance cost of over avg of 2k per year!!?!?!?! I pay about $650 full coverage a year on my 2010 II. You'd think a website like edmunds would also be up on the outstanding offers such as toyota care and put 0 maint cost on year 1 least. it would be unusual circumstances for someone to drive 25k+ in one year IMO.
Only thing i do agree with is fuel cost. That is about what I spend each year driving 14k a year
