Brought in my '13 Prius for my first service at 5k, since it's included with the purchase of a car. They asked if I wanted a car wash...I said sure. I know the automated carwash machines aren't great for the pain, but the car was looking pretty filthy with no sign of free time to wash it in the next week. An hour later my service is complete. On my way to work I notice that my radio sounds like crap. Park the car, look outside, the antenna gone. At first I thought they forgot to reinstall it after the carwash, but then I see that half of the piece that screws in is still in there. It broke off in the carwash. So I'm not sure how they are going to get that little piece out...but they said they would take care of it.

I only take my car to a touch-less car-wash near my house. I had 5,000 miles service and they washed my car for free, but fortunately, I didn't have any issues. The fact that they didn't pay attention to your car antenna while running it through the wash indicates that you need to find a new dealership for future services.

Question regarding the 5,000/mile service. I'm just a little over 4,000 miles right now. Will the dealership perform it if you're sitting around 4,900 or do they want you to be at 5,000 or more?

The bigger question is at the 25,000 mile mark when the Toyota Care ends. Are you able to get that last check up in when you're in the 24,000 mile range?

JH, any mileage is close enough, I know the dealer I went to for the service made sure it got each 5k service done, even the 10k done at 13k, I never did the 20/25k as I drive 35k a year, just is months between services. At 44k I changed both the oil and trany fluids, yes the oil was 20k on it, but what the heck.

That's up to you if you insist. Dealer should do it without a problem at around 4900 miles. Most of what they do at the 5K service is just tire rotation unless something shows up. I'm sure the dealer can check it out for you when you get to 24K miles.

Perfect opportunity to upgrade to the better looking sharkfin antenna. Some big dealers (Longo Toyota for one) carry the beat sonic sharkfins. Maybe have them install that in lieu of trying to fix the base and it might even be cheaper/less work for them.

The maintenance required message comes up at 4500 miles so anytime after that is fine for the service. Just take it in between 24500 and 25000 for the last one.

I took advantage of the complimentary 10k and 20k services and ignored the 5/15/25. I saw no reason to waste my time and Toyota's money to let the dealership do basically nothing other than look at the fluid levels and ask me if I was having any problems. Well, they did try to BS me that air and cabin filters should be changed by 25k miles, but I file that under 'stealership nonsense' and not 'service.'

Even a car bozo like me can look at a fluid level; and if I couldn't it would be well past time to learn. As for early problem detection: if I had noted anything I would have brought the car in for evaluation rather than wait to be asked. And it's not as if the bumper-to-bumper warranty ends at 25k miles.
