First oil change on my Prius v. Ran to Walmart and discovered Mobil 0w-20 on sale for USD$22.47. Got my Blitz Rhino Ramps out and drove the Prius v up on them. Really easy compared to the CR-Z I used to have. Unfastened the oil tray flap of the underpanel. Removed the three quick fasteners. Removed the oil pan drain plug (14mm) and drain plug crush washer (oil pan drain gasket). I let the oil drain out for an hour. Even after an hour, it was still dripping oil from the oil pan at a rate of one drop every 20 seconds. Good enough. Installed the Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve (Part number: F103N, $25.95 from quickoildrainvalve). Got the Assenmacher Specialty Tools Oil Filter Socket Wrench (Part number: TOY 640, $16.24 from amazon) and filter prepped (Genuine Toyota Part: 04152-YZZA6, $35 for a case of 10 from midatlantictoyotaparts). Removed the oil filter. Here you can see the Assenmacher Specialty Tools Oil Filter Socket Wrench, dirty filter and the Oil Filter Cap. Just in case, I had a replacement Oil Filter Cap (Dorman Part Number: 917-039 Oil Filter Cap, $27.08 from amazon) on standby. New filter and gasket installed into the Oil Filter Cap. Drained out about 4.5 QTs. Refilled it with the same amount.... left the Fumoto Drain Valve open by mistake. Spent two hours cleaning up the spill. Jacked up the back of the Prius v to level the car so that I could refill the oil and check it for full. I had no idea how much oil drained out. Spent another two hours draining the oil and checking for full. Lowered the back down, drove the Prius v off the ramp and washed my mouth out with soap.
i also went for oil change at walmart and paid $62.43 for the same oil change mobil 1 , it was 30000 mile n dealer was asking $299.99 for the 30k mile service
Anyone know if that filter housing is the same as the one on the liftback?? I have a POS Filter wrench and need to get a proper one. Thanks.
Yes my Toyota dealer charges $60 for a oil change with OEM 0-20w oil and filter a fair price but if you buy a new car from them and pay a one time fee of $99 you will get unlimited oil changes for life of car............ crazy
Roughly 5000 miles. My dealer has free oil changes for 2 years (if I remember correctly). However, I like to do my own servicing.
I'm considering doing my own service as well. I hear too many stories of how they will mess up things. Oh the dilemma of them offering it for free
I have a Prius v with 2k plus miles on it. It's good to know that oil service for the first two years is free. Can I get them done at any Toyota dealership? Since I bought my car from a far away dealer I can't take it to them. Is there anything else free for the first years? (please don't scream at me - I'll read the manuals again if you don't want to answer this question)
I've bought Toyotas several states away and never had a problem bringing it to a dealer near home. Never detected any difference in their attitude. I suspect there is a limit to the number of oil changes you get for free as when I wanted my first done at 1k, they said they would just use one of my free ones. So I'm sure I'll bump into the limit before the normal 'follow the book' person would.
Sounds like a great example of why not to do recreational fluid swaps. you JACK up the back of the car to put oil in it? If you know you drained 4.5 quarts out, why is it a mystery how much to put back in? Why not just dump 4.5quarts of oil back in, drive for a minute, top off. your first oil change, that wasn't necessary anyway, wasted 9 quarts of oil, that cost $45, plus a $25 oil plug(that really sounds like it works great) plus a $30 spare oil filter cap?? seriously?...and it took you five hours?? holy crap, I guess if you want something done right you have to do it yourself....but you don't seem to do it right. If I ever did an oil change that took me even one hour I'd reevaluate my competence at doing oil changes. Such is the false-economy of "cheap insurance".
It seems like 5k oil change is too early but this a personal preference. It's probably a good idea to replace the oil at 5k miles to flush out the contaminants in the new engine. Synthetic oil viscosity should last longer than 5k miles. I wander how dirty the oil at 10k miles oil change. Your oil filters still looks clean.
What is the point of the drain valve that the OP installed. It is that much quicker than just pulling the drain plug? With all the gadgets purchased, plus the wasted oil due to spillage, I'm guessing the OP spent double what it would have at the dealer, even if he was paying for it. Not even addressing the issue of time.
