We've had the v for almost a month now and just returned from a trip to Northern NM (Rocky Mountains).

    1. Highway MPG was disappointing. Going across West Texas I only averaged 32 mpg. Going up and down mountain passes I was averaging almost 50 mpg. Average for the trip was 39 - more then double the vehicle it replaced.

    2. The display screen (radio, gps, backup, etc) is useless if you where sunglasses. The voice recognition is as bad as siri (both worthless).

    3. The fuel gauge is not linear. When it shows half the bars left I need gas within 100 miles.
Question: how accurate is the range display? At one point I wasn't sure we would make the closest gas station - we made it with the display saying 3 miles till empty.

    4. When you put your foot down to pass on a two lane highway it has more power then I would have expected. It accelerates nicely from 55 on up.

    5. I can hear the engine revering hard going up steep passes - I wish there were a tach and temp. gauge so I could reassure myself that all is well.

    6. Overall very happy with the way it preformed. Plenty of space for the four of us with lots of luggage and a big cooler of food.

Get yourself a ScanGuageII and you got tach and temp and whatever else you want to monitor.

These calculations the car does are based on current fuel consumption, so if you happen to be using a lot of fuel the projected range will be low. You're better off just watching the gas gauge. Once you're down to the last pip you should look for gas, but many people report going 50+ miles after the projected range is zero. When you see the little red gas pump indicator come on, head straight to the nearest station. The car will shut off the ICE with about 1 gal of fuel remaining in the tank, this to prevent damage to the fuel system. At that point you have only the EV system to keep you going. If you generally fill up with around 10 gal, you're doing it right.

If the car runs out of gas, there are 0 gallons left in the tank. IIRC the 'low fuel' beep and warning activates when about two gallons remain. I do not recall exactly how much fuel remains when the range = 0, but it is easily over a gallon.

The tank holds 11.9 gallons. The most I have ever refueled is 11.6 gallons. I am in the somewhat odd position of thinking it pretty silly of people trying to run the fuel tank down to almost empty, yet I pretty commonly add 10.5 - 11.0 gallons when I refuel. In my defense I'll say that I know how to calculate the actual distance remaining in the tank to within a couple dozen miles, and I have an excuse: I drive between locales that differ by 10% in fuel prices, so I push the tank a little to reach the less expensive fuel. I figure I am doing my small part in giving the oil companies my middle finger.

We had the display showing as low as 3 miles until empty but never had a warning or beep from the car? When the car says the range is zero it actually has at least a gallon of fuel left? It will definitely go farther then the cars range says it will?

Incorrect. There have been more than a few reports of people testing this idea. The car will not allow you to run completely out, and 1 gal is a fair guess on remaining fuel when it shuts off. It never "runs out". That 1 gal guesstimate is based on reports with the standard Prius, but its fair to assume the V is similar. The V does hold a bit more fuel than the standard Prius. Perhaps its 1/2 gal on the V, who knows because the shape of the tank and sump area will determine this. But its a certainty that the ICE will shut down before the fuel level is low enough to damage the pump and related parts.

As pointed out, you're better off just watching the actual fuel gauge. The displayed range is just an estimate based on the calculated mileage. Its there to keep you out of trouble.

    Link ?

I'm not even sure how this would be tested, since I doubt the fuel tank was taken apart ;)
In any case, this might be a semantic argument. Can we agree

    1. Toyota says the tank volume is 11.9 gallons;
    2. If you run the car to fuel exhaustion, you will be able to put 11.9 gallons in
    3. If you then put 11.9 gallons in, you will next run out after 11.9 gallons have been used

As I posted earlier, I have never run out of fuel, but I have put 11.6 gallons in during one refuelling. I never try to add fuel past the auto shut-off.

That's absurd and never heard or read about this before. I too would like to know why you think there is still 1 gallon, or any amount of fuel left when you run dry. I've filled up with 11 gallons before but never run it dry. Previous liftback and current v never once 'shut down' because I had less than a gallon remaining.

Eh? No if you run out, you're done (just like any other car ever sold).

TexasMustang: The DTE (Distance to Empty) or Range readout is just a guideline. I find it typically guess when the low fuel light is on (i.e. based on your driving, it continuously updates and try to give you an idea of how many more miles before the low fuel light comes on). For most cars, I would guess that the low fuel light still means you have a reserve. For Toyota, that reserve is 10 litres (~2 gal). I usually drive an extra 60 miles or so and refuel with 1.3-1.5 gal left. (so approx. 10.5 gal fill up)
