These calculations the car does are based on current fuel consumption, so if you happen to be using a lot of fuel the projected range will be low. You're better off just watching the gas gauge. Once you're down to the last pip you should look for gas, but many people report going 50+ miles after the projected range is zero. When you see the little red gas pump indicator come on, head straight to the nearest station. The car will shut off the ICE with about 1 gal of fuel remaining in the tank, this to prevent damage to the fuel system. At that point you have only the EV system to keep you going. If you generally fill up with around 10 gal, you're doing it right.

 

If the car runs out of gas, there are 0 gallons left in the tank. IIRC the 'low fuel' beep and warning activates when about two gallons remain. I do not recall exactly how much fuel remains when the range = 0, but it is easily over a gallon.

The tank holds 11.9 gallons. The most I have ever refueled is 11.6 gallons. I am in the somewhat odd position of thinking it pretty silly of people trying to run the fuel tank down to almost empty, yet I pretty commonly add 10.5 - 11.0 gallons when I refuel. In my defense I'll say that I know how to calculate the actual distance remaining in the tank to within a couple dozen miles, and I have an excuse: I drive between locales that differ by 10% in fuel prices, so I push the tank a little to reach the less expensive fuel. I figure I am doing my small part in giving the oil companies my middle finger.

Incorrect. There have been more than a few reports of people testing this idea. The car will not allow you to run completely out, and 1 gal is a fair guess on remaining fuel when it shuts off. It never "runs out". That 1 gal guesstimate is based on reports with the standard Prius, but its fair to assume the V is similar. The V does hold a bit more fuel than the standard Prius. Perhaps its 1/2 gal on the V, who knows because the shape of the tank and sump area will determine this. But its a certainty that the ICE will shut down before the fuel level is low enough to damage the pump and related parts.

 

As pointed out, you're better off just watching the actual fuel gauge. The displayed range is just an estimate based on the calculated mileage. Its there to keep you out of trouble.

I'm not even sure how this would be tested, since I doubt the fuel tank was taken apart
In any case, this might be a semantic argument. Can we agree

1. Toyota says the tank volume is 11.9 gallons;
2. If you run the car to fuel exhaustion, you will be able to put 11.9 gallons in
3. If you then put 11.9 gallons in, you will next run out after 11.9 gallons have been used

As I posted earlier, I have never run out of fuel, but I have put 11.6 gallons in during one refuelling. I never try to add fuel past the auto shut-off.

 

That's absurd and never heard or read about this before. I too would like to know why you think there is still 1 gallon, or any amount of fuel left when you run dry. I've filled up with 11 gallons before but never run it dry. Previous liftback and current v never once 'shut down' because I had less than a gallon remaining.
