Goodbye Prius Family

    In 2010 I leased a Gen III Prius, after two years I was at 50,000 miles on my 45,000 mile lease with 1 year to go. I talked to the Dealership and they got me out of the Lease with the purchase of a 2012 Prius C. I have had the Prius C for 1 year and 14 days, but just traded it in on a 2013 Chevy Volt. With all of the dealer incentives I was able to get a $41,000 Chevy Volt for $33,000 before tax Credits and $25,500 after the tax credit was figured in. My PriusC was a $23,500 car, so to me the deal was too good to pass up. In the year I have owned the car, I had a lot of fun tearing it apart and putting it back together. I wish I would have acomplished more with it - but now am glad I did not dump too much $$ into it. Anyways - its a great community of people here, and a great vehicle. Thanks for the good time, and I will check in periodically.

    Great deal and a good car imo, assuming 1 charge per day, will 25,000 miles per year makes the Volt more expensive to run?

    A Nissan Leaf, assuming 1 charge per day in my area equals $31/month. I can't beat that in gas, considering that I drive 25k/year. The volt has a smaller battery with ~40+ miles per charge, so it will be cheaper to charge, but you will be using gas if you are truly doing 25k/year.

    If only 1 charge per day, Volt will use a lot of gas for 25,000 miles per year.

    It would be around half of my daily commute... so I'd probably be around 12k miles on gas only. Still much much cheaper than the PC.

    260 working days (@5 days a week) x 40 miles, equals 10,400 miles. 25,000 - 10400 = 14,600
    miles needed to travel on gas. They say the Volt can get 40 MPG. 14,600 divided by 40 = 365 gals.

    Most gas is about 4 bucks per gallon. 365 x 4 = $1460 bucks and don't forget the charging costs
    of about 35 bucks a month. 35 x 12 = 420 annually. I'm gonna round it up to 2K per year with the Volt for 25K miles.

    The C, at 50 MPG will pencil out: 25k divided by 50 MPG (being real world conservative) = 500 gallons @ 4 bucks = $2K

    IMO, the Volt is a looser because of the higher purchase price over the C :p I would by the C-Max Energi plug-in
    over them all.
    It has the biggest lithium battery @ 7.6 kwh and it's looks like a regular car. Plus it will haul nice person when you punch it.

    The LEAF with a battery of 3 times the size of the volt was $36/month... I have an 80 mile round trip to work and back and I end up with 25k/ year. That's why I said roughly half. I'm sure I would be able to use it for just about every weekend trip. As mentioned by the OP, after the credits, he is paying and additional $2k, so that isn't that much difference. Redo you math with these accurate numbers.

    The C-Max is worse than either according to your numbers. He is getting a Volt pre-credits for the same as a C-max real world availability numbers... how does that make it better? It has a bigger battery, but it's a heavier car so its battery only goes a "rated" 10 miles farther. While this will help, it will also cost more to recharge.

    The Leaf won't get 80 miles per charge. It's all based on averages and no two drivers will get the same mileage from any of these cars.
    Driving habits and terrain will vary widely. The smaller battery will naturally require less $$$ to charge, but it's range is still the limiting factor. An all electric vehicle will get better battery range without the extra weight of the ICE system, but if you kill it, you're done :eek:

    I always apply the K.I.S.S. method when it comes to hair splitting $$$. Practicality wins out for me every-time.
    For me, the Leaf isn't even on the table.

    The LEAF will absolutely get 80 miles per charge... just depends on how fast you are going. Plenty of people at the mynissanleaf.com forums would disagree with you on that one. But that's semantics... nobody said the LEAF was on the table.

    It's rated at 75 miles per charge. Like I said, nobody will get the same due to the many variables encountered.

    This is from an article on Edmun's. Pushing the range on an EV is like playing Russian Roulette :ROFLMAO:

    It's no different than running out of gas... oh wait, it is... EVs will tell you about it about 4 times, instead of just flashing a light. But again... semantics... nobody is trying to convince him to get a LEAF... why do you keep bringing it up?

    and you'll notice that you initiated and I responded... EVERY TIME... the only thing I mentioned was that your math on $35/month came from the LEAF and not the Volt and off you went.



    Here was the original quote... I was just pointing out that your math was wrong. So again... please run the numbers with the correct math in place. :confused: You'll find that the Volt beats the PC and both beat the C-max.

    I spent 4 years here, owning a Honda Accord, and then a Honda Fit....

    I make no apologies, while this is primarily a Toyota Prius enthusiast's website, it is NOT only about Toyota Prius. And I know, you can be interested and involved in information about Hybrids, Toyota, and Prius and not necessarily be owning one at the time. So from my perspective....

    Drop in...and let us know your P.O.V. on owning a Volt, especially in comparison to your 2 pronged Prius owning history.

    Congrats, what color did ya' get on your Volt? I'm partial to the Crystal Red ;)

    And as Electric said, definitely check in, while we are Priuschat and focus on Prius, we are not solely Prius and most of us welcome input into other vehicles.

    Congrats..

    PC is still a great place to hang out no matter what you drive.


    Umm the Volt has a 16.5kWh battery which is bigger than the C-Max. And the op got his volt for $2500 more than the PriusC, so yes its a little more expensive but will also save on gas.

    More importantly than running the numbers on price, I think you might find the the quality of drive is another consideration.




    I wonder if crystal red volt owners are more likely to be active at Prius Chat?

    Yes, but I wasn't including the Volt when I said that. Someone else dropped in with the Volt comments and it fell apart from there.

    You said
