In auto mode, I can't direct the output to both the dash and the floor. When I try to select that, it drops out of auto mode. Seem like odd way to do things.

Also, in normal mode, I can set the temp and control the fan speed manually. So what's the point of auto mode?

I think many people just leave in auto mode set the temp they want and the car adjust for heat or air cond. as needed. set it and forget. Just up or lower temp as needed.
As for it droping out of automatic when switching to floor and ect. I'm not sure I would need to go read the manual on the heating cooling system in owners manual and see if it says anything.

The point of auto mode is to automatically control the output direction and fan speed.
I believe that if you override the direction by selecting dash and floor it continues to automatically do the fan speed even though the light isn't on anymore.
It's allowing you to override whatever part you want. If you want to override something different, put it back in Auto mode then make your new selection.
The temperature is always controlled thermostatically unless you select LO (for coldest AC or unheated fresh air) or HI (for hottest heat).

Knock on wood, my AUTO mode works brilliantly. I set the temperature at 72° in the summer and 68° in the winter and just go.

I override AUTO for two things: (1) to turn the system OFF when I'm driving with the windows down, and (2) in the winter, I will override for full windshield defrost and then move distribution to floor/windshield to aid in defogging while letting the system control fan speed and temperature as needed.

    +1.

If the car gets too cold on A/C and auto, it means the temp setting is too low.

I personally use manual settings as I don't like fan speed too high (noise). Besides, I often drive with windows down. It's a blast up to 50 mph.

I have my AC on all the time, I do not use Auto, I set my temp at 70 deg and use only recirculate air flow. The auto function toggles between outside air and recirculate air. There is also a 10 deg rise for hot and cold, that's a very wide band. I know if it is 65 in the car and I need heat I have to set it over 75 to get heat. Cooling is easier, defrosting also opens the outside air.
