Both the photo op and the restaurant scenes were pretty funny. BBT often has Star Trek references and guest appearances.

Has anyone else seen Star Trek Continues over at Vimeo or YouTube? This is a re-creation of TOS as what would have been if there had been a season four. First, I'd suggest you Hulu up Season Two, 2nd episode "Who Mourns for Adonis" and then watch the Continues series full 51 minute show, where that story, well, continues as "Pilgrim of Eternity." There are a few more little vignettes up there too.

I won't spoil it, but also look at the credits closely. Some familiar names.

Excellent.

I'm also quite excited about the new film. And very excited about the TV series starting next year.

 

Going to see Beyond tomorrow. I hope I don't get disappointed without Abrams.

 

I hope it'll be better than previous ones. The newer the StarTrek the crapper they get. TNG was good, then DSN went a bit pear shaped, the Voyager was pants and that latest prequel thing was unwatchable.

All's not lost as they're always showing the original and TNG.

 

I hope the new movie does well.
I'm NOT one the pits one franchise against the other, I really do embrace both. However, I would say I think Star Wars has done a much better of job of expanding it's appeal and re-inventing itself for a younger generation. New television series, games, toys, book tie ins Which actually saddens me, as I'm a big Star Trek fan.

My 10 year old nephew, when presented with the possibility of going to see the New Star Trek movie?
His response was that he thought Star Trek was for old people.

It was a sigh and exhale moment.

So this new Star Trek....reportedly full of action, I hope it does well and can attract not only the core base, but hopefully expand and renew the appeal.
Maybe I shouldn't take my nephews response so seriously, as his idea of great cinema is an Alvin and The Chipmunks movie, BUT...it would be nice if he was as excited about seeing Star Trek as seeing Star Wars.

 

When I was in elementary school, I painted a fuzzy looking Enterprise firing on a Klingon Bird of Prey during art. My teacher excitedly asked me if I was a Trek fan to which I replied yes. She said her favorite character was Kirk or Spock, I don't remember what she said exactly. I said something to the tune of, "I don't watch the old stuff. It's for adults, I watch the new stuff" And to me, The Next Generation had no meaning as it is the only Star Trek I knew of. So as a kid, it was Star Trek for me, as it was on TV. Now, it's Clone Wars so obviously kids will be Star Wars fans. We need that new Star Trek series to get released.

Anyway, 2 mores hours to go before I see the new movie.

 

To use a baseball analogy, I think the Star Trek franchise needs a hit.
Sadly, very sadly, I think the reputation of Star Trek as being a more cerebral brand of Science Fiction works against it with the younger generation. I think this is unfair.
When I was a kid, we played "Star Trek" like other kids from previous generations, played Cowboys and Indians.
The original series, IMO had a great combination of action and also quality story telling. Which is why IMO it's appeal bridged me from a child, to a rediscovery and re-appreciation as an adult. Then of course with time to Spin Offs and Next Generation Era.

So in any case, I really hope the new movie is at least "good".
I was disappointed in Star Trek: Into Darkness.- Just left me flat.

A new series? Most importantly it has to be good.

 

That's what I was trying to get at. Westerns died out it in the 80's and 90's when I was a kid just as Trek died out in the 00's and 10's. Now, the new stuff is Star Wars and Doctor Who. (on the other side of the pond anyway) So kids will gravitate toward the new stuff.

I absolutely loved the last two trek movies, I can't decide which I liked better. Nothing beats Wrath of Khan and Into Darkness is a fantastic homage to it. And I am not a fan of the Fast and Furious director. My expectations for this movie is low. But hey, even Pokemon came back.

 

I was disappointed in "Into Darkness", but my expectations were high.
Had become a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch from his work on the BBC series Sherlock, I think he's an excellent actor. So when I heard he was going to play Khan in the "New" Star Trek movie, I was really psyched.

I don't know, it's not that it was terrible, I just was left thinking the whole thing had a "phoned it in" feel.

Which is why today, I'm really hoping this movie does well. As I said, I think the franchise could use a hit.

 

Saw "Beyond" this past weekend.

I thought it was good.
And I'd say Pre-Criticism that it was going to have too much action was unfounded.
Which I always thought was ridiculous criticism anyway. If you take Star Trek as a whole, there has always been lots of action.
The Original Star Trek Reboot, plus Star Trek "Into Darkness" both have LOTS of action. Beyond does as well, and it's fine.

Unfortunately, maybe, I can't really get much more enthusiastic than to say I thought Beyond was "good".
I enjoyed it, it was fun...it was a good evening at the movies.

I don't think it was the undeniable, super hit, that I think Star Trek the franchise needs.
It was a good showing.

I was left once again thinking the original casting of the new reboot crew was brilliant.
It would be daunting, to take up the mantle of trying to embrace those iconic characters. And I think the group of actors they assembled do a great job. Mixing just enough familiarity, to make the characters recognizable as the characters they are, but simultaneously pushing the boundaries of adding new dimensions.

But for the good of the franchise, I really hope the rest of this cast is afforded the opportunity to make more movies.
Seems like they are hitting their stride.

 

I didn't think I would like Beyond and after watching it, the movie did not disappoint. It is easily the worst of the reboot trio. It's a good movie while the first two were excellent.

Justin Lin said in an interview that some half an hour of the movie was cut. One of those scenes was of Scotty frantically trying to find a way out when he was cornered on the ship. I remember how oddly paced the movie was because one moment he was surrounded and the next moment he did what we all saw in the trailers. What? What just happened? Did I miss a part of the movie? According to Lin, yes, I did. He had to cut out Scotty trying different things to find the solution because it didn't fit the pace of the movie.

That's how I would sum up the movie. The story did not get fully fleshed out. The motivations of each of the characters were not explored except for of course, Spock, Kirk, and Bones. I had a lot of questions to ask about how a person got into this situation or what happened previously.

My take? Good movie but I recommend waiting for the extended cut release otherwise, you'll feel like you went on multiple bathroom breaks while watching the movie.

P.S. My wife and I still disagree on how many of the alien race they were fighting against. My coworker and I say a lot, how would you know? How can you count? She said they told you in the movie. Perhaps I missed it? Seriously, if they had just done a little montage on the origin of the antagonist(s), that would've been helpful.

 

Well, in this forum, I wanted to avoid any specificity in regards to a discussion about the plot. If only NOT to accidentally or inadvertently create a whole lot of spoilers that someone who hasn't yet seem the movie might stumble upon.

I agree that Beyond...was far from perfect. It was "good" and very enjoyable.
There were a few plot devices, that I won't discuss, that I simply did not like.

In an environment as potentially far reaching as any Star Trek universe, I think you can actually get mired down trying to over explain EVERYTHING.
I think a strength of "Star Trek" is rich, diverse, fictional environments, but presentation and interaction being executed through familiar characters. Which is to say, I'm not sure the movie really needed MORE revelation or development of explanation of motivation of Alien Species. IMO Star Trek is ultimately always about Kirk, Spock and Bones.
With the possible exception of Khan, as nearly a "Moriarty" to Capt. Kirks, Sherlock...usually motivation for any Alien Species is limited to what is needed to tell the story.

Overall? I give Star Trek kudos, for creating Klingons, Romulans, Vulcans, and "Alien Races" that are very well fleshed out, and detailed, and often vital to the very fiction itself.
