Just thought I'd throw out that with Summer here it might be the perfect time for regional Priuschat people to get together and install vinyl roofs as a group. It should go pretty quick for the second roof. The cost for a vinyl roof install around here is $300 to $250. I think the 1080 3M vinyl is about $55 (I think). That means we could save about $200 for a roof. Should be able to do a roof for about $60? It is much easier for 2 novice people to install. It would also give the opportunity to see another Prius or two modifications, chat in person and have a beverage or two. Oh, and take pictures of the "party". Anyone in Oregon interested?
I have been thinking of putting black vinyl on my roof. Any thoughts on matte vs satin vs gloss in regards to durability/ease of maintenance? What brands of vinyl are good?
I have no trouble using this thread as forming group get togethers/parties for vinyl roof installation. In fact I think it is a great idea! I think we should keep the thread just to getting the groups formed. For clarity I would suggest that you contact the other person(s) via private message to arrange your meeting(s). As far as the actual installation and techniques we can form another thread, if we get that far. This new thread could include techniques, material, and lastly PHOTOS of our work and party. So: One from Ohio One from Oregon One from NoCal One from SoCal. So, again contact via private message and then announce on this thread that a group has formed. If you are from another area please feel free to post here your request. I think I may be best to limit the groups to no more than 2-3 people since it will take a bit of time to do each car during a day, but that is up to you.
I apologize, I finished my last post after you did yours and did not see your post. For this I am sorry. I just created a section to talk about DIY installs and quoted your post. DIY Vinyl Roof | PriusChat
If you get some roof wrap parties going, please take lot's of pictures and video. There are videos of experienced people vinyl wrapping online, but I haven't seen one of klutzes like us tackling something big with vinyl wrap. That would give us some idea what the learning curve is like. I've done some interior vinyl wrap with 3M Dinoc (just an example, Dinoc isn't recommended for outside use) and think a couple of people that read about the subject and carefully planned the job could do a good roof job on their first try.
i've been told its either 3M or oracle. i think glossy looks way better than matte. the biggest problem i have is keeping the vinyl clean. i'm surrounded by pollen and dirt. so theres a continual layer of dirt. it looks really good clean. its easy to clean with a quick detailer or just water.
If I can't get my roof wrapped during the "To Go Before" event in Socal this month then I'd be down for a NorCal wrap party. Heck I'd be down either way.
