I am considering buying a PiP in VA or MD and bringing it back to my home state of Nebraska. I just called my local dealer to make sure they can service it and he quickly and emphatically said nope. Oil changes, yes, but that is as far as it goes. Is this the same experience others have had? And does this put an end to my dream of owning one?
That's not been the conventional wisdom here. You could save yourself a few miles by looking in western NY state.
Eventually, even the flyover states WILL get PiP service. The thing is, do you really think you're going to have some kind of traction pack failure? Then you need to worry. If you've driven hundreds of thousands of relatively trouble free miles as folk here have, then you needn't worry - and you can buy one anyway. And like your dealer says ... 'regular' junk and 'regular' failures still get handled under warranty. MFD goes out? no problem!! electric window relay goes out? no problem !! It's under warranty. Pretty low risk that the pack will fail in the time period between now, and Nebraska PiP tech training. .
My dealer in Wisconsin told me they are trained and ready to fix any problems if any happen! So far so good no problems at all.
I thought that Toyota had no problem with customers buying out-of-state, and all Toyota dealerships in the U.S. had service training for the PiP, even if they could not sell them in their state.
I bought mine in California and have been very driving it here in Minnesota. Despite being so lonely, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. With national rollout not too far away, there's no good reason not to do the same yourself... especially if you can take advantage of a discount in the meantime.
And here too in Colo. I am told that any Toyota dealer can service my new PiP, even tho I bought it out-of-state and had it trucked here. This is unlike Ford dealers, where only some (and not the ones near where I live) can sell or service the new plug-in hybrid, so I never even test-drove their new one.
