EV up & down, seasonal effect

    How many threads have you encountered over the WINTER complaining about EV range dropping?

    Only a handful of owners last year had the opportunity to experience the climb SPRING brings. As a result, there was a lot of frustration from many and very little real-world data to work with.

    To make matters worse, Prius PHV is a plug-in hybrid, not an EV. So when we'd try to get MPG information from a new owner absolutely convinced there was something wrong with their car, they'd get defensive saying we weren't taking their range concerns seriously.

    Now, we have the real-world data available. My own EV estimate & range has increased as a result of the seasons changing. Winter literally ended just last week (bad snow storms). Spring has sprung here. The last 3 days, the estimate has risen from 11.3 to 11.6 to 12.1 miles. The resulting range has increased as well. Not as consistently matched, but range is well above the 9 miles of EV that I experienced during Winter. The previous three days have been 14.7 and 14.2 and 14.1 miles. Spring has clearly ushered in much better results.

    It makes me wonder how those who had complained will now respond. Getting an endorsement from them would be great. We need owners who closely observed the seasonal effect.

    absolutely correct, let's hear from you pip complainers!:cool: we had one 70 degree day and i drove 16.5 miles on ev, albeit at 22mph avg. yesterday was 58, but the estimate was still at a high of 14.1 and i drove to work and back 14.4 no prolemo with a few tenths to spare. funny how one cold day doesn't seem to have much negative affect. it will be interesting to see if there is any noticeable loss of capacity after a year, so far, looking good!

    I think I read somewhere that there's something like a 1:3 ratio of praises versus complaints. When something is great and exceeds expectations, there's nothing to be said. But when something is wrong, unleash the fury!

    So what I expect is lots of complaints in winter. Fewer complaints in summer. So far that is what's happening.

    My EV range estimate went as low as 10.9 miles in winter. Highest so far was 13.3 miles. That's 0.2 miles higher than what it read when new! But here's the interesting part. My actual EV driving range in the morning is the same 11 to 12 miles in the morning. I pass by a freeway exit when I run out of EV. Sometimes I pass it, sometimes I don't. That's for those who keep saying their commute is the same everyday at the same time complaining that range is lost. I vary by as much as a mile doing nothing different. If there were more differences like rain my range decreases more or a semi to draft which increases it.

    Okay, maybe I do get a little more range now. Lately, I more often pass the exit before I run out of EV. But I've only noticed it the past 15 days commute to work. Not enough data points to conclusively say I get more range from increased temperature.

    Let's see a low of 35 at 5:30 am as reported by my car to a high of 70. But on average, temps were 40 in winter and 55 now... So about 15 degrees at my 5:30 commute time.

    Can we get some commentary? us base PiP owners are clueless.

    Average temp in the morning is 50F, estimated range went up to 12.1 miles (was around 10.8 during the winter). Set a new record of 14.6 miles, and that's with many hills (but at low speeds). Can't wait for the days when it's even warmer in the morning.

    That said, I've never complained, I knew what I was getting myself into, but the warm up has definitely made a big difference.

    My NJ winter saw estimated EV range locked at 9.2 miles. Now that warm weather has arrived I seem to be stuck at 10.5. Also, I have never reset the MPG count and it has gone from 68 mpg's to 77 as of today. (my ratio is 35 ev / 65 hv)

    I believe all this only means something if you drive the same route every day. Many folks do exactly that so the effect of temperature appears to be important. Since I don't commute my route on any given day can be quite different than the previous day. The temperature the last couple of months has been mild and slowly increasing. I have full charge EV readings from 13.1 to 14.9 miles that are clearly affected by what route I used the previous day or two. So far I've never seen less than EV 13.1 shown with a full charge but I've only had the plug-in since early March.

    Got my PIP in the middle of January. EV range started at 12.7 miles, fell to 9.8 in early February and has gradually risen since the middle of March. Was 17.5 this morning :).

    Managed to extend my EV to 21 miles today with careful driving. Think the warmer temperatures are having an effect but I am also a bit more knowledgeable on how to drive it.

    This morning's temperature (48°F) was 10 degrees lower than it had been. EV miles (actual driven) dropped from 14's to 12.4

    Being able to drive the same route the same way is indeed quite revealing. Unfortunatley, new owners don't have that basis of comparison available yet, nor are they aware of all the influencing factors.

    At least we have a collective of owners who have experienced Winter now. That will really help as the temperatures fall as the holidays approach... when those threads begin to emerge again.

    I've yet to see this EV increase people speak of. It dropped in the winter and never went back up yet the car takes just as long to charge.

    EV potential is influenced by temperature in two ways, both total capacity (smaller in cold) and electrical resistance (higher in cold).

    I've seen it happen twice, since this is my second Spring. There's lots of waiting & watching required...

    I managed an estimated 20 EV miles driven on flat straight roads on the freeway with an average parking lot speed of 15 mph. Those are horrendous traffic days. I get stellar fuel economy as a result. Half gallon of gas and 1 full charge to go 50 miles. See my signature.

    speaking with some fellow PiP owners I've yet to see a problem with the 2013s
    My 2013 was at EV 12.3 in 30 degree weather and just today gave me a 13.6 read after charging (70 degrees).

    every time I've heard of a range problem it was a 2012 PiP

    Have a 47 mile commute to work. First 3 miles is fairly flat and I use EV for this bit. Gentle acceleration with not going over 30mph.

    Then a motorway trip of 30 miles (HV). Cruise control at 56mph. Then onto a fairly undulating road. Use HV for the uphill bits and EV from the crest of the hill and the downhill bit. This road is 9 miles long. Only lose on average about 4 EV miles on this section. Would generally drive this bit between 40-45 mph.

    Then the final 5 miles is on a city dual carriageway. Max speed 40mph. Only a few hills, again HV on the upslope parts with EV on the rest.

    Averaging 102 mpg over the past two weeks :). So much better than the 32mpg I was achieving in my last car which was a high powered diesel.

    Generally using at present approx 10 EV miles but actually travelling 15 miles. Also should say that the AC is off and I have never had it out of ECO mode.

    Finally had warmer temps. around 55-60 degrees f in mornings, Tue. Wed. Thurs. Actual EV miles driven 17.0, 16.9, 16.9,. Today Friday 42 degrees f and total EV was down to 14.6, just my two cents! Nice change since 9.8 EV in winter time.
