4th generation coming 2015!

    As I understand alternatives to Otto, better efficiency at the cost of peak power is obtained by recirculating piston pressure through the manifold in order to reduce throttle losses. The mechanism is often some version of delayed closure of the valves.

    To everyone freaking out:

    They will not change the Prius design drastically. I repeat, they will not change it drastically.

    It's really just business 101. They would not dare change something very much when it is such a cash cow for them and when the look of the Prius is so iconic. Add that to the fact that cars look almost nothing like their initial rendering. Sure, it could look a bit different but I can guarantee you that it won't be drastically changed, so calm down folks.

    If you have a 2010, why would you need a 2014 already? Do you drive like 50k a year or something?

    So basicly a Prius engine only supercharged, I don't think you gain the efficiency (maybe you loose some?) but you gain low rpm torque. A turbo instead of supercharger would definitely gain some efficiency, but I doubt Toyota is going on a turbo path, we will see.

    Good question.
    My 2010 is almost pristine..... from the front wheel-well back. It does have 70000 miles and in September we will drive it once again across the country, (it's 5th trip) so the miles are adding up. But I recognize that is not that many miles for a Prius. The G3 has been an absolutely perfect car for me in my circumstances.

    Of greater concern, however, is about a year and a half ago I ran over a piece of angle iron on the Interstate. It damaged the air dam up front, and broke the front wheel-well liner loose from the front fender. The front sheet metal in front of both front tires, is slowly "tearing" where the iron hit. Secondly, about a year ago a deer ran in front of me and hit a glancing blow to the front end. The deer jumped up and ran away. Neither of these incidents caused sufficient damage to require body work, but the sheet metal is slightly "skewed" with uneven gaps showing between the fender and the left and right of the hood. The damage is not so noticeable from either incident that most people would even see the damage. Additionally, the car is Blizzard Pearl, and I understand that is a color that is near impossible to match.

    Then, my grandson needs a car, and there is a lot of miles left in the 2010.

    OK. I read Wikipedia. I came away with the impression that Atkinson and Miller are somewhat similar, but Miller is associated with super ... and turbo charging. Then GasperG states above ... "I doubt Toyota is going on a turbo path" .... I agree.

    Not that I care, but is the presumption that the Pathfinder and the QX50 will be turbocharged?

    Turbo, supercharger, or battery can all solve the same problem: Lower peak power from designs that delay valve closure.

    Just as you would not expect to see a car with both a turbo and a supercharger, we are unlikely to see Turbo or a supercharger in a car with a traction battery unless it was a turbo with a mini traction battery.

    The rear end reminds me of a Citreon (I think that is spelled correctly). Anyone old enough to remember those?

    Boy, four A/T ES tires were expensive. I'd hate to buy 8.

    I think Toyota 'released' this prorotype to fool the competitors. When the real thing comes out,we will be surprised. I guess. This style is totally out of the origina gentle and smoot concept. I don't believe this will be the gen 4.

    Considering there's a rumour that the next Yaris will be based off the next Mazda2 platform to save cost (yes Mazda), there may not be much truth to it. Why would the Prius be smaller than the Prius c? In addition, the chassis needs to support the Prius v and Prius PHV, both are currently 200-ish pounds heavier than the Liftback. A Yaris platform will not be able to support that kind of weight.

    The engineers will have a challenge for the next gen. It has to be lighter and stronger to help reduce fuel economy and increase crash safety but at the same time, it has to be able to support more than one type of vehicle - the v and PHV and the extra weight that comes with it. I suspect (and it's my own opinion, not Toyota's) that the current Prius v & PHV are compromise for weight purposes. The next gen versions should be much improved, if only because the chassis will be designed to take the extra weight.

    This is why I think it won't be based on a Yaris platform.

    They'll be supercharged. 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid arrives with supercharged engine, 26 mpg combined

    The last car on sale in the US with a supercharged miller cycle engine was the Mazda Millenia.

    2.3 litre Miller Cycle engine with about 210hp.

    I suspect that's what Nissan is doing - a supercharger with a smaller Li-Ion battery pack. The way it's set up, it appears to be a mild hybrid, not a full hybrid.

    Oh and only the Germans would turbocharge and supercharge an engine :)

    Good analysis IMO ^^^

    Would any of you guys care to venture a guess about how actual sales prices will compare with MSRP or invoice once these beauties come out a little less than 2 years from now. Will they be hard to find thereby going for a premium? I suppose we would have to go off of history of the Gen3. What happened at the dealerships when they started getting on the lot? Thanks!

    It would be hard as it'll be based on the market at the time of launch. It'll depend on how Toyota will roll out the vehicle (e.g. West coast first then the rest of the country a few months later? west & east coast then the rest of the country? or all at once but with greater inventory going to areas where the Prius sells well?). Also, are there enough changes to generate interest? (ext./int. design, mpg, space, high tech goodies, safety etc).

    Personally I think I'm going to hold off on my purchase until the Gen4 comes out. But I live in the middle of the country. Think dealers around here might have it by January 2015?

    And roughly when might Toyota makes it's formal announcement of the Gen4 and all the specs and sale price?

    The one "tidbit" from that MotorTrend article that I like is the availability of 4WD-i. I doubt I can get it on a PHV so it'll be a toss up between plug in and AWD. There's also the challenge of a lower profile for better highway aerodynamics but also you need clearance otherwise AWD won't be as effective.

    It depends on when the Gen 4 will be released. The typical cycle is 6 years for the Prius so far (industry average is 5 years for mainstream models like the Camry or Corolla and closer to 8-10 years for luxury models like the LS, S-Class and 7 Series), so we should see it late 2014. That MotorTrend article mentioned that it's been pushed back because of the economy to early 2015. My best guess? Spring 2015 on sale date.

    Based on that, we probably won't see any details until the 2014 L.A. Auto Show in November unless they decide to unveil it earlier elsewhere (e.g. Geneva or Frankfurt) or delay it to the 2015 NAIAS in Detroit. Depending on how well Toyota conceals their testing (or the lack thereof if they want their vehicles photographed. E.g. I didn't see any spyshots posted on the new Highlander so we didn't see it until the NY auto show yet the Prius c was spotted in camouflage), we'll start seeing spyshots in 2014 when the do final testing.

    Toyota won't make its formal announcement until the vehicle is ready for release with pricing closer to actual launch, whenever that may be.


    This educated guess based on my years of following Toyota in North America.

    Well, you get what you pay for.. I've been in my wife's avalon-hybrid the last 3 days and just drove my 2010 prius again.

    .. Sorry to say it now feels like a horse and buggy :-( I feel every bump, hear every squeak, as well as road noise. It feels more like a sports car than my prius because of suspension responsiveness and quicker takeoff and us way roomier.

    I'm a bit spoiled.... If your looking towards anything resembling a Lexus, check out the 2013 Avalon instead.... A very nice car for 40 mpg.

    I hope the Gen 4 will up the quality of ride, otherwise think I'll pass.

    Once you go comfort it's difficult to return to economy class. Heck, even the camry hybrid is a night and day difference in refinement to the Prius. Maybe Toyota needed to push the envelope more with recent prius generation changes.
