    Which way generate more electricity?

    1. Cruising... Foot off accelerator, let car slow down
    2. Gently braking...

2 because the lighted area moves further to the left in the braking area of the display. Go to far near the left end of the braking area you are using the friction brakes.

May be about the same, To cruise to stop, the generator kicks in earlier.

More brake pedal, more regenerative braking until you go too far and start friction braking. See this thread. Regenerative Braking | PriusChat

Hi - I am reviving this pretty old thread. I need some advice on my commute and how to get maximum efficiency from my new prius plug in.

I drive about 45 miles one way to work. Home to Freeway distance is around 5 miles, Freeway to work exit is 39 miles and then another 1 mile on surface streets to office. I do have free EV charging at work.

My return commute is bit tricky though as the freeway (CA 237 E & 680 S) becomes parking lot during the evening commute.

    I will appreciate any help!

If your morning run is at highway speeds, start off and remain in pure EV mode and use EV-boost once on the highway above 63-63 mph and the engine automatically starts. That should fully use your wall charge and you can exit the highway and do your best to keep within the EV range of HV mode for the 1 mile city route.
    Recharge at work.
Leave the city and crawl on the highway in pure EV mode as far as possible. Eventually the engine will start but only for several minutes, after which you will have a fully charged battery and can continue in the EV range of HV mode for fairly long periods, with occasional engine restarts to recharge. The last 5 miles could feasibly be a combination of EV/HV and your overall commute could be impressively efficient.
Good luck and enjoy your new PiP(y)

The best driving technique for the Prius is to commute to your job 5 miles away, charge up for free at work, and drive home, all in EV mode, with a stiff tailwind both ways.

So I just bought a used 2013 Prius Plug-In with 48000 miles on it. Went from 2002 Mini Cooper S to the Prius and it has been the best thing ever. I feel like I'm riding on a cloud. Anyway I have read some of this thread and will use some of the techniques as I drive 42 miles one way (84 round) to work M-F and want to maximize the wall charge. Currently I charge up at night, drive in Eco mode into the city then switch to EV mode once off the highway. I do not have the option to charge up at work as some of you mentioned.

Congrats & welcome! With winter coming on you might get a couple extra miles of EV if you use the charge timer function to end your charge shortly before you leave in the morning.

The car is kept in the garage. When I get home I plug it in let it charge over night. I have been getting about 14 miles per charge.

A heated garage will certainly help you hold the charge. Fourteen miles is about as good as it gets. Was your 12V battery replaced. Me? I am wondering if my range is beginning to suffer from nursing the original 12v battery.
