I was stuck in the snow..my roommate to give me a push like usual.... Drove up to red light...proceded up a hill...the usual route... Then half way through while going 55 mph my e brake deploys on my rear right tire......I parked on the side of the road, turned off the car, twice, then the ebrake turned off.

I had 3 moving wheels and one locked....

    Tread ripped off.

I take my car to toyota...they tell me my ebrake wire was destroyed???? The underside of my car has a lot of damage???

I'm clueless. How in the hell is the underside of my car so destroyed? I didn't know snow could do this?? There isn't an rocks or objects in the snow route...

Why is the ebrake wire under the car in a spot that it can get damaged in the first place?

    -------

Cost is 700 dollars for a new tire and repairs to the actual wheel....

    -------

My second problem in 3 months.... in december I hit a freaking tire in the road(like a huge truck tie, rocked my car) and got the car repaired at an auto shop recommend by progressive....Toyota is telling me I had to have hit something....Progressive is telling me that If I had a problem with ebrake due to hitting a tire in the road the ebrake would have deployed the day I got the car from repairs in december???

I feel like I'm getting ripped off.....The day before this I drove through a huge puddle of water and parked.......

Is it possible my accident in december could have damaged my ebrake thingy under my car and driving through water triggered the events of the following day??

    What a sour situation.

when it rains, it pours. keep your head up, sooner or later, the frustration will subside. it may be a day, a week, or a month, but eventually, it will go away.

The ebrake failing could be a lot of things. maybe an animal got hungry, maybe you ran over something, maybe the previous accident tweaked it. Shit happens (excuse my language).

Sounds like perhaps the rear brakes seized up on you? maybe being in snow had something to do with it.

    Good luck

Wow, I am so sorry to hear about your situation. Will pray for you, light a vigil at church and be thinking of you. No words I can say will really help but I have been homeless myself after being hurt in the service and it taking a long time for the VA to help. Have serious health issues myself but each person's problems are so very different. All I can say is I feel for you and pray things get better for you.

That's what I thought. Why all the talk about broken wire and how can it deploy itself then?

The emergency brake? Is that what's being discussed here?

The more articulate/detailed reply for friendly_jacek would be that something damaged the cable which controls engagement of the emergency brake, thus causing the brake to engage on one tire while the car was still in motion which resulted in much damage to the tire. At least, that's my own take on what appears to have happened. We may never know precisely what caused the emergency brake failure (or cable failure as the case may be), unfortunately.

There are instructions in the manual on how to stow it out of the way. I suspect it would be difficult to remove altogether.

On the part where the belt attaches to the seat (not the regular buckle) there's a little grey portion. Stick your key in there to press it and it'll unlatch, and you can stow it in the ceiling.

It always takes me forever to work out... it is never called an emergency brake here (and certainly not an e-brake). It is always a parking brake (as it is called in the manual). This thread is helping a little becuse I'm having this slow penny-drop experience when I see this pop up every day...
