A year ago when I was researching cars I was skeptical of how wise buying a used Prius could be. But after a year I wouldn't hesitate to do it all over again. These cars are really well built... Of course most people considering their used car purchase options still have serious doubts so I created this thread Did you buy a Prius with 100K+ miles? Share your story here! | PriusChat to encourage/inspire 'em.

 

My 2006 now has 310,122. No problem with the odometer, all the numbers are clear, and the miles keep ticking away.

I haven't heard of this before but Toyota does have a recall out on that part of the instrument panel because sometimes it will no longer light up, so maybe you could argue for a free replacement based on that recalls?

why did you replace the battery pack?

 

229,000 so far and other than routine maintenance I have had to replace both headlights and both front wheel bearings. No big thing. I live the car....

 

I read the 300K thread first, wow, I feel like such a newb with only 212K, LOL, ... well here goes, 2004 Prius bought 1/12/2004:

1) Did you replace the HV battery pack? ​

Nope!​

2) Did you replace the 12v lead-acid battery? ​

Yes in 2009, ​

3) Did you replace the hybrid transaxle fluid? If it was part of routine service, I don't recall any special conversation about it.​

4) Did you replace the brake pads? ​

Yes at 187K​

5) Your lifetime MPG (if available)? Lifetime 43 mpg, but since I started commuting 112 miles a day (8/2009-present) 45 mpg, I travel the 280 corridor Bay Area California, two nice elevation gains.​

6) How often do you change your oil? Every 5,000 at the SFToyota dealer, not sure what they use​

Today I looked at a 250-300K replacement vehicle: Avalon Hybrid, RAV 4EV, or Prius plug-in. I think I'll wait until the Prius V comes out with a plug-in model. I ruled out the Volt, I think the Prius plug-in beats it hands down with commutes under 15 miles and over 50. ​

This is my first post to this site. I have 227,000 miles on my 2008. I am having some issues with my Prius and I am learning a lot here. Here are my answers:​

1) Did you replace the HV battery pack? No​

2) Did you replace the 12v lead-acid battery? Yes at around 150,000​

3) Did you replace the hybrid transaxle fluid? Yes​

4) Did you replace the brake pads? 2 times​

5) Your lifetime MPG (if available)? 40.0​

6) How often do you change your oil? What brand / product did you use? roughly every 5,000-6,000 Usually penzoil high mileage​

7) How about post a picture of 200,000 miles on ODO? Not Yet​

I would like to get this car over 300,000 miles​

Few concerns or fixes for anyone that can help...​

1-My dash doesn't come on in the morning sometimes and from what I've gathered it's the combination meter. How do I get it fixed​

2-My catalytic converter is out causing my check engine light to come on. I don't want to pay the dealer $2,000 to fix it. I live in California so I can't find an aftermarket part for it. Any suggestions?​

3-My tire sensor stays on even though all the tires have adequate pressure.????​

4-Half the buttons on my steering wheel don't work. How do I fix this? is it a fuse issue?​

5-My keyless entry and start have not worked for awhile. I have to plug my key in and push the buttons to unlock it. I've changed the batteries in the remote and it still does not work.​

I would present those issues on the maintenance thread to get the best exposure from those that know.

IMO, a catalytic converter should not be rocket science.. Simply cut it out with a saw and weld another in.. Welding can make anything fit.
But I'm just guessing!
I would think any monitoring systems have to do with exhaust back pressure resistance closer to the engine rather than delicate sensors on the converter itself as it gets so hot.

Breaking 100k seems barely broke in anymore.

There is a warranty extension on the combination meter. Toyota will fix it for free, but it takes several weeks with a loaner car.

I can't help here, in some other states there are options

There have been discussions about this. Where in CA are you? There are several good independent repair facilities in CA (eg, Avi's repair in Sunland - Tujunga, CA and Luscious Garage in SF).

There is a button below the steering wheel to turn SKS on/off. See if pressing it restores keyless entry.​

I had the same issue and it turns out the error was the red "alarm"(?) button was stuck, pocket lint, imagine that!

 

The tire sensor issue could be due to you buying your tires at a shop that uses NO2 to fill the tires instead of normal air. Different density air throws the sensor for a loop.

 

286,600 miles on my 2005 Prius. Ordered new and put each mile on myself!
Regular oil changes and tires as well as regular rotation.
No Major Work other then I just had to have the brakes done @ 285,000.

Love my 2005 so much we just picked up a 2011 Prius 2.

 

My 2005 Prius just broke the 200k mile barrier. Car has been a great, rock solid vehicle. I have had no issues with it and still am getting the same 46-53 mpg today that I was when new, however when I drive it I get 46-49,when my wife drives it, she gets 50-53. Both of us commute about 160 miles round trip, we alternate using our Prius.

1. I have not replaced the HV battery and based on my high mpg, it is still strong.
2. I did replace the 12v battery last year, went to an Optima yellow top. Mostly due to age.
3. I have not replaced the transaxle fluid (did not know I needed to, I may do it now).
4. Believe it or not, my brake pads are still original (I know right?).
5. I have consistently averaged 46-53 mpg for the life on the vehicle.
6. I change it every 15,000 miles. I have always used Mobil 1 syn Ext Performance with the Mobil 1 filter. I have recently started using the Mobil 1 Syn High Mileage (at 175,000 miles).

My 2005 Prius, 202k mile without a problem. Car has been solid as a rock. Still getting 48-53 mpg up here in New England. Mass.
Life time MPG 48.01

1. I have not replaced the HV battery and based on internal temperatures. And cell SOC Delta’s were looking great
2. Still using my OEM 12v battery, voltages look great.
3. Replaced transaxle fluid at every 45k.
4. Replace engine coolant fluid at 80k then every 40k after.
5. Replace inverter coolant fluid every 40k.
6. Brake pads/front rotors replaced at 181k.
7. Replaced brake fluid at 200k
8. upper/lower radiator hoses every 80k
9. Serpentine every 80k
10 Oil, I change every 5,000 miles. with Mobil 1 w/OEM filter.
11. Replaced water pump at 78k, (under warranty) breather hole was weeping
12. Replaced HID headlight level sensor. (under warranty)
13. Replaced both HID bulbs at 192k

Yes, 3 times, use Toyota only

5-20W whatever is cheapest

 

2004 Prius option 8 or 9 (has nav). Bought used in 2005 with 29,000. Was previously a fleet car for some company.



I reached 230,000. Average 35,000 mpy, biggest repairs have been water pump at 183,000 miles. Had intermittent code problems from 85,000 miles to 105,000, that turned out to be lack of engine coolant, the dealer fixed that at 105,000 miles. Lights and codes got real bad after I slid into a rock at my driveway on an icy day, damaging the coolant thermos. I patched it together again, and roped in position and has been working good since the 183,000 repair to add coolant again.

1) Did you replace the HV battery pack? No, still strong as new I think.

3) Did you replace the hybrid transaxle fluid? Twice, 133,000 and 183,000
4) Did you replace the brake pads? Once, 125,000 but they still had months of wear left.
5) Your lifetime MPG (if available)? About 44 MPG
6) How often do you change your oil? What brand / product did you use?
Change oil average 5,000 miles, use Chevron or Mobile 5-30w or cheapest.
7) How about post a picture of 200,000 miles on ODO? 233,000 miles Mar26th.

From 50,000 and beyond I installed and used a hitch for all kinds of loads, 2012 was all time biggest load, weighed Gross at 7000 Lbs. Average weight of one brick - 25 Lbs. (I got 22 MPG for this 120 mile trip loaded, 35 MPG trailer empty). It just amazes me how much power it has. Accelerating and braking no problem.
