    I had 3 hits in the last 2 weeks, so Friday morning after work I stopped by my Dealership to ask about it. Had copies of the 2 Service Bulletins and talked to the Service Adviser I've been using since the car was purchased. Going back next Friday morning to drop it off and have one of the leather covers resecured as well. He did say they need to duplicate, but was aware of the condition, knows me and knows I do not BS about my car. The post above is interesting because the noise and shaking is similar, although when the event occurs normally it dissipates within 10-15 seconds and without throwing a code. Crossing my fingers.

    In the "naturally" occurring one, the moisture is dried by incoming air. Some people DID get a misfire code IIRC.

    Very aware of this issue and the reports from other drivers. I just wish mine would throw a code to make it easier on both sides.

    I have *never* experienced this engine knock and I have been in sub freezing to 100+ degree (f). Granted I only have 6k miles and its a 2012. Knock on wood.

    The only rule I always follow though: If ice starts, wait until it turns off before turning the car off. I never kill the car with the engine running. In the worst case, I put it into ECO mode and wait the <2minutes for the ice to turn off.

    Could it all be something as simple as this?

    I have stopped my engine countless times during start up in COLD weather and never had a problem.

    The two times I had the problem was one, early in a cool morning (Sept) and there was a lot of dew. Second time was later in Oct and I had driven ~35-40 mins, stopped at an appliance shop, stayed for about 15mins and experienced the knock when I started up. The engine was fully warmed up.

    Those episodes happened just before 5K miles and didn't have another up to last spring (another 24K miles) when I got the IM replaced.

    I dont know if humidity or dew has anything to do with it (or maybe it hasnt been enough time for me)
    but when I am in south florida, the car is wet literally every morning...... I dont keep the car in the garage or anything. Sometimes it is so bad that I have to wipe off all the windows because I cant see through the fog effect that built up on everything. But if this was suppose to be corrected by 2012 maybe I cannot contribute any good data.

    Haven't had this happen for awhile now with the exception of 1 week ago I started up the car to move it to a different spot in the driveway.
    The car was fully warmed from a previous highway trip and had been sitting in the driveway for 4 hours when I had to move it. Outside temp around -10 celsius.
    I normally quickly turn off the climate control and press the EV button when I have to move the car like this but this time EV mode would not engage and so the engine started up.
    I decided not to wait for it to complete the warmup cycle as I didn't feel like sitting in a cold car for 2 or 3 minutes so it ran for about 30 seconds from startup then I turned it off.
    Next morning, start it up to go and it idled very rough, lots of knocking for a bout 25 seconds before it eventually smoothed itself out, i tried to help it out by pressing on the gas pedal a bit while in park which revved the engine a little more making it knock less.

    Machine last week stood in the warm garage 2 days. the launch was without knocking. I think that the reason the temperature of ambient air.
    And yesterday took the collector and washed the inside of the collector. Under the throttle was the liquid with a thickness of 10 mm.
    Took place the same day and in the morning again knocking.

    What was the fluid? Water or oil. Not clear from the pictures.

    I do not know. It is not oil, not water. A strange substance, which corrodes everything in its path. :eek:

    Not sure what you are suggesting: acid rain, radioactive fallout, meteorite dust, or someone pissed into your intake?

    You got me worried. How hard is to take the intake apart? Did you have to replace the gasket?

    Well, kept my appointment to fix the seat cover and to address the engine. Three hours later the seat was handled, but they were unable to duplicate the engine knock at start-up and told they will not fix what's not broke. It was also mentioned that if they changed the intake and the problem came back there was concern about the Lemon Law o_O . Was then told to bring it back if it happens again, they will try again, and document the findings, broke or not. Came home and called Toyota to find out how to address this issue and they gave the same speach my Service Adviser gave and that Toyota would not force the Dealership under these circumstances. Also told me the T-SB is written as an amendment to the Owners Manual and for the Service Departments to have as a reference. Loaner cars are at the discretion of the Dealer if left overnight, as my Adviser suggested. So basically everything is at the discretion of the Dealership if the problem is not duplicated by them or it throws a code. I have a no cost receipt for records.

    Everything pretty much happened as I expected, but Toyota did give me a Reference number to document my call and concern. I'm only posting this to further document today's events for myself while it's still fresh, because it was a long night at work and I need sleep now. Thanks for your patience with my ramble.

    To anyone interested...This T-SB has the intake changed out with part #17120-37052. Called the parts department and was told the current Part is 17120-37054. So the intake is on it's 5th evolution. Cost to buy before tax and consumables is $274.70. Will peruse this T-SB if it happens again, but if it's not handled will likely just change it myself.

    I've been wondering idly if the knocking might be caused by a malfunction of the hydraulic valve lifters. Haven't read through the complete thread: has anyone raised this?

    No, it's misfire of one or more cylinders. Check my video on youtube. Knocking is produced at 1:10.

    When you guys are taking your cars in, are you referencing this TSB or just telling them your car starts rough sometimes?

    I first experience and recorded hard knocking Dec 28th 2009! 2yrs later they finally determine root cause and corrective action!

    Glad I found this thread.

    After 28.5k miles my car first produced knocking sound during morning start up and threw a CEL. Got my car towed to the nearby Toyota dealer and they diagnosed it as bad IM. It's being replaced under a warranty.
