LET'S GET A MOVE ON

Discussion in 'Gen 1 Prius Plug-in 2012-2015' started by Andyprius # 1, Jul 12, 2012.

  1. As a group of forward thinking intelligent consumers, it is our obligation to urge commercial establishments to install charging stations, if they expect our continued purchasing. Keep it simple, and repeat if necessary. Stress EV, Don,t confuse them with hybrid. Trying to reach top management is the real problem.

It helps having real-world data available to support the request; otherwise, it's just an ideal based on hope.

So come next year, when the nationwide PHV rollout takes place, we can do exactly that.

Remember, some of us have yet to deal with the effects winter... specifically snow removal. That's a major obstacle when it comes to charging stations.

Mall surveys are the easiest place to start. Since there are several stores and they rely on you spending more time there it's a good fit.

How do you respond when the lot/store owner asks how much it cost to setup a commercial-grade station with the ability to expand later?

It's roughly $10,000 for that, a difficult sale for vehicles so rare still the owner may not have ever seen one.

  7. KISS ! There is no need to get complicated/ expensive. Just a simple female 110 Volt plug-in. Either way, they will not get their money back on the installation. However, they will definitely get profits on their retail products because of customer support. I hope that you are right on next year John. Sorry, I keep thinking CA is the country, how ego-centric of me. But I understand, I also lived in MA, WI And Ultimate Thule.

Guys(and gals), this generation of PiP will not be able to use a publicly installed charging station for a reasonable price.
I'm not signing up for a Blink account because 3KWH is just too small an amount.
I just plug into an ordinary 120 V socket in the garage at home.
If we were driving Leafs or Tesla Model Ss, then I think it'd make sense to lobby for public charging stations.
Or perhaps you want to lobby now because you know in 3 yrs, TMC will come out with more electric range and then it will make more sense for us to want to charge at work?

However, this overlooks the TIME aspect.

Expected usage for a public charger is 1.5 hours... the duration of your visit to a restaraunt or coffeeshop.

The current battery-pack in is sized perfectly for that.

This is exactly what distinguishes the PHEV from the EV crowd. Short, measured trips that leverage the capability to completely recharge @ 220v within a 1.5 hour window.

I used to HATE going to IKEA. Drive up and down looking for a place to park, end up FAR from the store, hike back with purchases. Now, I can park in FRONT. The real front, like next to the sidewalk in FRONT of the store. Plug in, go in the store, shop around, check the time, eat meatballs, shop around some more, rinse, repeat. I have never had to wait for a charging space. There are 4 at the IKEA. An hour and a half is about all I can stand at that place, but I can stand it because there's a value added like the power-up!

Costco needs to be next in this hit parade.

  11. Believe it or not I did make progress with two major corporations on installing charge stations or using the 110 V outlets.l It is a pia but Email seems to reach Mgt. best.

  12. I asked a middle mgt. type about using their chargestation yesterday at a dealership and a mechanic gruffly asked me, " Why can't you charge at home?" I replied, " Because I'm here, I am not at home " I got a nice non-plussedreaction out of that retort. A good reason for mechanics to stay out of public relations. I was basically curious as to how responsive they would be. Yes, I did use a outlet. Incidently, as a group most of the dealers know nothing about the PIP.

You tell them that the Federal government is still subsidizing ChargePoint and Blink installations.

Does anyone know the actual cost of installing something like charge point or bink or some other outdoor charges with an access control system that my employer could put in our parking lot?

No, because there are still Federal subsidies for this, so the employer should contact ChargePoint and Blink to find out how much, if any, they need to contribute. It may cost nothing.

Yes, but right now it is a novelty for you. I have been driving my Leaf for a year and a half. The first few times to plug into a public station was a novelty. But after a while, especially in the case of you having a PHEV, you will not stay there longer than needed to do your shopping. Somebody in a pure EV might, if they needed the charge, though.
