GM Considers Three-Cylinder Engine for Chevrolet Volt, Cadillac ELR | Edmunds.com
    • GM is eyeing a three-cylinder engine for the Chevrolet Volt and Cadillac ELR, industry sources tell Edmunds.
    • It's part of a major effort by the automaker to reduce the fuel consumption and weight of its vehicles by 2016.
    • GM says it's too early to talk about its three-cylinder-engine strategy.
"A good rule of thumb is that a 10 percent reduction in curb weight will reduce fuel consumption by about 6.5 percent," Akerson said in a copy of the speech that was released by GM. "Our target is to reduce weight by up to 15 percent."

Hey the most substantial part of that is the date for gen II should be in 2015 as a 2016 model. The 1 liter 3 cylinder was the original volt plan. I would definitely expect a more efficient engine in the gen II, but they were floating other options as well. A 3-cylinder may hurt when it comes to nvh, which may hurt sales even if it increase mpg in cs mode. If they only increase electrical efficiency 8.5% that is likely from changes they get to the magic 40 miles with a 16kwh pack.

A more efficient engine, weight loss with some carbon fiber, aluminum, lightweight steel, and other materials should make Gen II even more interesting.

I think carbon fiber costs too much, but who knows, in 2015

The volt probably can lose that 15% by a lighter battery and engine, different design and more use of high strength lightweight steel. Its 3781, which is not light now, 3200 lbs will let them use lighter weight suspension and uni-bodies. If they can make it a little more aerodynamic at the same time there can be a big boost in gasoline fuel economy.
