I got a 75,000 miles extended warranty when I bought my 2010 Prius in August 2009, Now I'm at 53,000 miles. Nothing broke down yet, just annoying noises inside, and I get calls to re-extend my warranty. I need to know if there is a need for it ? And what is most likely to brake down? Thanks

If a warranty paid for itself in most cases, they would not be offered past mandated dates/miles. They want profit.

So based on that premise, on average a warranty is as useless as toilet paper and a lot less comfortable. However if you are one of the very very few unlucky people with problems, it will be a huge savings.

It is up to you to gamble on your scenario. Speaking in general terms again, Toyotas are very robust. The Prius uses so many simplified and robust parts, that I and many others would consider them even more robust than a conventional vehicle. So Toyota + Hybrid = really low probability of failure. But probabilities are just that. There still will be failures.

It's what your peace of mind can stand.

When you consider medical Insurance these days, the cost outweigh the return as you could simply put that money in an account and pull from it when needed.

The only time you get burnt is on catastrophic illness.

These odds progress against us the older we get.

But a new prius is always a new bouncing baby!

The fundamentals seem to never fail. Catastrophic failure just simply never seems to happen?

Never is a poor choice of words but the odds are in large in our favor based on history and Toyota's track record.

Seems you have to ask yourself... And be honest.... Are you buying insurance because it's a good investment or merely peace of mind?

Peace of mind is not bad.... That's worth something..... If you can't get it any other way.... Buy it!

Guess I should have added, my 2010 is at 98700 miles..... Just yesterday had the prius mechanic check things out.
    Everything looked perfect.!
Except my transmission fluid needed changed as I had never done it yet.

Yes I have the 100k warranty but have not needed it.... But the peace of mind was nice.
I only paid 990.00 for it.

I probably would not bother. The only items that you can count on replacing before 100k (that may not be covered by ext warranty) if you drive hard, are the struts and shocks.

A big question is what kind of warranty? Is it a Toyota one? If not it wont cover things like the trans/electric motor. And alot of other parts. Even the one they sell at alot of toyota dealers doesn't cover alot of parts on our cars they would be a huge waste of money. A Toyota one may be woth it as it would cover repairs.

I have 105,000 miles on my 2010 Prius with zero repairs. Toyota makes the most reliable cars in the world. The Prius is one of the most reliable cars they make. This is from Consumer Reports. They do a survey of what people had issues with over time. I red dot with a white circle is the highes rating you can get.

Based on statistics a warranty is a waste of money on a Toyota Prius. I never understand the logic when people say it’s for peace of mind. Paying more upfront for repairs that will never happen is the opposite of peace of mind for me.

Thanks for posting this, Netbook. I received my Consumer Reports yesterday and read through the same information you posted above. Additionally, in another location, CR indicated that the Prius has some of the highest customer satisfaction ratings of any car on the road in the U.S. Apparently, this car is extremely well liked, at least by the people that own them.

I also think highly (in general) of the newer efficient diesel vehicles, but noticed that many of them have more "black" marks, especially for fuel system related items.

I'm not so enamored with diesel anything since the fuel is notably higher and mileage is often worse and when better, its not so much to make up for that.
