How many are getting screwed by mileage tax?

Here in Virginia, the Governor wants to eliminate the sales tax - but to partly compensate the state coffers by a new hybrid and EV tax. So, in answer to your question.. "Not Yet"... oh BTW, this Governor is rumored to have Vice Presidential ambitions. Of course, not on my vote.

 

No mileage taxes have been passed. None likely to be. A TeaParty/Oil Company scam proposal to attack high mpg cars.

 

Gas tax in NY are killing us.

 

Maybe we should be thanking them that we have no income tax rather than feeling screwed that we have to pay for public services.

 

Buy a Prius and your gasoline costs will be a small part of your budget.

We do need to raise the national gas tax to pay off the $14T oil war debt we've run up over up over the last 30 years of military build up to and execution of Middle East oil war,

 

uuuummmm, why not just increase the tax on fuel? Even the pure electrics are paying tax on the electricity...

Under discussion here in WA. So is a $0.10 gas tax increase.

 

So let me get this straight: you get taxed on your earnings then when you spend those wages that's already been taxed for gas, electric, registration and driver's license fees to be able to drive, it gets taxed again. Now they want to tax for the 3rd time for miles?

I guess that sounds about right.

Also, don't let that low cost per mile fool you. It's low now just to get it passed then will go up each year.

 

This is how Cali got around it.

 

On top of a near 70 cents per gallon NY gasoline tax we have super expensive tolls - as high as $16.00 for major crossings (bridge or tunnel) - both ways (both ways is not round trip - certain bridges and tunnels charge for going both ways but only in one direction - figure that one out *MUAHAHAHAHA*!!!!). Less than a handful are relatively cheap at $1 or less - but those are just for a couple miles and are not bridge or tunnel crossings.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! You and your cheap Cali tolls. Our car registrations aren't super expensive - but it's getting up there - around $70 for two years for a 1 ton car (2000 pounds).

Those fee amounts are negative numbers. Does that mean they are giving you money?

 

No you have to fund the Toll account then they take money from the account when you use the toll road.

 

I grew up in LI and I'm a SUNY graduate. NY is expensive but wages are among the highest in the nation. But taxes and tolls are among the most expensive as well. You guys have high property taxes but we have lower in California. My California home my property taxes are under 6K a year. My dads home in Nassau County S shore pays about 12K a year in property taxes. Both are worth near a Mill

In California we have high fuel tax, high income tax and high sales tax. Corporate tax is high also. We have a very talented workforce to software, telecommunications, and biotechnology. But low tax states for example Texas, Arizona and Nevada prey on our businesses

Your right Cali tolls are very low compared to NY. But that company in Cali is privately owned. Ny bridges and tunnel employees are gov employees and your paying for those generous pension benefits. Gov fat is why your aging so much.

 

As mentioned in Virginia we expect to pass a new transportation tax law probably today (Saturday).

The $$$ money needed for mega road/rail projects is now going to have to come from more sales taxes, since gaso tax is declining and they don't want to increase it. We have regional conflicts here, so the regions getting the road projects are being allowed to tax themselves extra sales taxes for the projects. Also quite a bit more sales tax income is expected when (if) the US Congress ever passes the internet sales tax act. This sales tax is earmarked to roads.

In addition, hybrids/alt fuel vehciles will have to pay $100/yr fee, which is more torture tactic than fair idea here, as we already pay high annual property taxes on these vehicles.

 

Having done several stints of software QA, I'd be inclined to file a bug report about that display's incorrect number formatting.

 

Not living with those, although I wouldn't mind as long as they use a sum(axle_weight^4)*miles_traveled formula. My big fear is that they'd have a flat fee for light vehicles even though by the 4th power rule the repair cost effect would be dramatically different and it's really heavy trucks that cause a lot of the damage.

A simple gauge would be to take the current tax rate per gallon, divide by 25 (current fleet economy) and add 20% (generally underfunded/overly expense) to give you a per-mile estimate.

Of course, switch to that and gasoline becomes cheaper, meaning there's less incentive to be economical. However, it would soon come back to bite as without a volumetric excise tax consumers feel the full volatity of gas prices.

 

*lol* details... it's all in the details! Mostly true - but things have changed on LI over the years and not all for the better. NYC is a bit better but I don't have many projects out in the city for environmental consulting. However, at least the tolls do, for the most part, go back into the infrastructure. But these separate infrastructure/toll/taxes are BS. NY invoked a MTA Tax (for the lower NYS metropolitan areas that use rail/subways) for the last two years - which I think is similar to this gasoline tax - basically to make up shortfalls. However, it was recently ruled unconstitutional under NYS laws and was repealed.
I think the important thing to note is that the majority of our laws should have sunset clauses on them so that they must be reviewed after every so many years or be repealed. We have too many outdated laws... and we have too many lawyers.
