I just bought a 2010 II with 60k miles. I'm going in for an oil change and am trying to decide if it is prudent to have both fluids changed as well. the dealer has quoted me $42 for the oil change and $230 for transaxle and coolant change. does that sound competitive? every 30k for the fluid changes, right?

    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Yes do it. For a Dealership that is a fair price. Make sure that includes both engine and inverter coolants. It is ALWAYS wise to zero things out on a used vehicle. You might consider a brake flush too. No such thing as a lifetime fluid.

Your coolants are good till 100k miles so wait for that (you need to do it again every 50k miles thereafter - read the owners manual and make certain to use Toyota Super Long Life Coolant.).

Ask for a quote on ATF fluid (Toyota type WS) drain and refill (do it again every 60k miles). It should be about $100 and may extend the life of your Tranny - an expensive item to replace.

You should have the dealer pull the service records for you to see what has been done.

Thanks everyone. I'm at the dealer now getting the oil change. They will pull service records and give the car a once-over and then discuss with me what more needs to be done. I didn't buy the car here, but they seem to be very professional in the service department. Pappas Toyota.

I'd just get the oil change for now.

Just the way you say "fluids", says to me you need to research it a bit more, LOL. There are various "fluids" in there.

I'll admit that I'm new to all of this, and not much of a mechanic on tradional cars eeither. But I was just trying to be quick by calling them "fluids." I've been reading PC for about 90 minutes this morning, so I could probably write a book on the subject now!

Service dept pulled records and show that the "fluids" ;) were changed at 50k (before I bought the car). So, just the oil change today!

Thanks everyone for your advice today. I'm addicted to PriusChat.

Be sure to get a copy of those service records! We have been told that when a Totyota has been repurchased the online records will be deleted (toyotaowners.com).

Not all records are deleted, only those not performed at a Toyota dealership. Toyota's explanation is that the only records they can verify are those performed at a dealership.

Good advice to get a copy copy of service records.

Right JD, that is what I meant to say... the owner entered records which in my case would be all that mean anything. :)

    Fluids works for me!!

$230 for the Inverter & Trans is very good price. Wish mine was that cheap. Jump on that just don't let them upsell you on anything else. No injector cleaner, brake flush etc.

I had them do the recalls on my 07 and do all my own work but they said they would clean & adjust the rear brakes for $55 and that was cheap. I have never had the drums off back there and they need to do the starwheel adj. so I let them do that. Ask about that since its up in the air.
    Car stops much better now.

I'll admit, I think the dealers charge WAY too much for service, any service. Do yourself a favor, learn to change your own oil at a min. It's very easy, and you know it's done right as you did it. Go to Costco, get some Mobil 1 synthetic which is usually $10 off a case of 6. Find a recommended local shop to do other service you don't want to do and save yourself lots of money. Oh, get a set of ramps you can drive up on, very easy to do. I recall about $35. I use mine all the time. Allows me to look around under the car and makes oil changes very easy.

Besides the oil change, I wouldn't do it. Follow your owner's manual. Most cars today call for oil changes, tire rotations and inspections only. Everything else including fluid changes comes at 100k miles or more.

Transaxle fluid's worth changing. I did mine a the end of year one, intend to do bi-yearly from there onwards. Our miles are pretty low, date typically governs. Toyota's guideline is to never change the stuff.

I looked in my maintenance schedule brochure from Toyota and there is no mention of Transaxle Fluid in the first 120,000 miles however many on Prius Chat say it is wise to do it every 60,000 miles or so since a Transaxle replacement is as expensive as a Knee replacement (Not realy but it is expensive).

I find this an interesting topic because there are opinions on both sides; change it every 30K miles, don’t touch it until 60K miles, then every 30K after that, never change it - it's "for the life of the car", change it after 120K miles... I have no opinion as I don't know which is right. I do know it seems very easy to do yourself and I recently (yesterday) got a quote for $80 to have it done at a Prius Hybrid shop.. which seems reasonable.

Are there ANY downsides to changing it? One could be, it does not get refilled correctly - but we know it should take 3.5-3.8 quarts.. so this is a good indicator. I suppose I don't see any downsides - and you can do it yourself or get is done for about $80.
