So I just put down a deposit on a blue PIP. I talked them into throwing in a rear bumper applique, but now I'm wondering if I really want want it. I can see an argument for avoiding scratches to the bumper when loading and unloading, but not so sure the big plugin lettering won't look tacky. What say the crowd at PriusChat?

It doesn't look that tacky. The lettering isn't too bright and stand out. It is kinda dull and muted. On darker colors you would be able to see it a lot better. I would get it to protect the rear from loading and unloading cargo.

They're all opinions and this is only mine but I don't like it personally. I'd try and get something like interior mats or the rear cargo mat thrown into the deal instead.

I'd get it. I had it on my 2005 and liked it. I didn't get it on my 2012 and eventually the dog slipped when jumping in and gouged the paint. The appliqué would have saved me an ugly scratch. I'm going to get one for my PIP.

If you don't get the applique then get the rubber strip. If you don't cover the top of the bumper don't complain when it gets scratched or scraped because sooner or later cargo is going to run across it.

I have a black rubber strip now and never liked the look on this car, but I know it saved me a few times when loading large or heavy stuff. I guess I'll try the appliqué and see how it holds up. I think I've seen 1 or 2 posts from people who didn't think they held up very well. Looking at the pictures again, the lettering seems relatively low key. I want to get the vinyl cargo tray too, but the dealer didn't have it in stock, so they couldn't have thrown it in very easily.

I got the dealer to throw in the full clear bra package but forgot about the appliqué. :(

I have the applique. it came with the car, I'd have the rubber strip if I had the choice, that said the applique is better protection than nothing.

one thing to keep in mind – having the cargo tray will completely, forever, prevent you from using the storage compartment where the 110 V charger is normally kept. because of this, as well as the fact that the backs of the rear seats stay completely unprotected, i will end up replacing my cargo tray for a canvasback as soon as i have a job.

I thought the Toyota version (compared to weathertech) was relatively soft and could be rolled or folded up easily. Is that not true? I wasn't planning to have it in the car all the time anyway, but if it's not easily storable, then I agree, I'd rather just use one of the canvasback variety, or even just keep a plastic sheet rolled up in the hideaway storage.

Because the tray is so small on the PIP I don't really have a problem accessing contents even with the WeatherTech cargo liner. Sure it's not as convenient as a foldable design but it does prohibit access to the tray. If you don't need a super durable liner the OE version may be better because it folds.

i wish that was the case, but no. the only Toyota version that rolls up easily is the carpet mat. the cargo tray is pretty tough, and it also has a lip that goes all the way around, which makes it even harder to raise it because the contour of the interior "walls" prevent you from easily lifting the tray due to that raised lip.
if you want, i can try taking a video showing this.
again, as stated above, the OEM version does NOT fold. I really wish it did and that the modification they made compared to the liftback version was more than just changing the logo. but alas, nope, hard as a rock.

Yeah, thanks for the info. I guess I was remembering posts about the original rubber mat. Is that still available?

maybe you're confusing it with the all-weather mats that go inside the car, for passengers?
also, why are we talking about this in two different threads? lol

Well that other thread popped up this morning so I figured what the heck. When the 2010 came out I thought I remembered reading about an oem rubber mat that had folds in it.
