My rear hatch is difficult to lift and close. When new it would rise easily and close the same. The dealer service says I need 2 new hatch stays. Over $500+. Any suggestions?

Try your local car parts store instead of the dealer. should be under $100 for parts and it's a DIY job.

Yes, the gas springs (those black cylinders on each side attached to hatch and body) lose pressure over time. Mine are beginning to get weak in cold weather after 6 years. They shouldn't be difficult to replace, $500 is way too much. I agree, less than $100 for parts.

I haven't done the job, but it looks pretty simple. Read the instructions in the link above and watch this video. It looks like the trick is getting the clips off. If you look closely at the struts, you should be able to see the clips plainly. Yeah, I know the video is for a Acura Hood Lift, but the principles and procedures are very similar. The main thing is the clips.

    Hope this helps!

I'm happy with the OEM Stabilus SG329019 struts that I got for $59 on Ebay
