Actually, it's more complicated than that. I found a picture of the improved part 51410-12103 posted by Den49 in this thread: Oil Change Door - Permanent Solution | Page 2 | PriusChat
It clearly shows the transaxle holes covered. While the part I have 51410-12104/51410-12105 (not sure which) has them uncovered. Weird!

 

my dealership gave me this part 51410-12105 #44033

this is the part that I need for the bottom

 

No takers on the holes vs no holes?

BTW, I peeled the sticker with hand written "12105" (see my pictures on page 2) and the plastic cover has this puzzling designation: "51410-12104 with Silencer"

I'm curious what they mean by silencer.

So you are the one that caused it to crash...

 

The odd shaped approximately 8"X9" cover you are seeing in the upper right corner of the above new engine undercover photo is one that I fabricated to cover the two openings in question. It did not come with the new engine undercover. I did it as an experiment. Those two openings allow a lot of road debris to come up into the engine compartment. The openings also seem to counteract the thermal insulating function of the undercover by letting in heat from the road in the summer and cold in the winter. It seems to be working as intended with no negative effects. If you look at those openings, you will notice that they appear to be made to accept covers.

 

They sure do. Den49, thanks for explaining the little hole mystery. Since my new cover is labeled "with silencer" I'm thinking what we are referring as thermal insulation could be actually sound insulation. No wonder Prius' engine is barely audible, unless pushed to work hard.

I'm going to leave the holes open, sounds like they can help with tranny cooling. I live in hot climate. I can see why people in arctic climate may want to cover them.

If those black patches are sound absorbing material, that explains the "with silencer" nomenclature
