Hello, Yesterday the check engine light came on in my 2006 Prius. I took it to the dealer, and they said that the camshaft gear and valve cover need to be replaced. Specifically, the diagnostic report says "P0011. Camshaft position A timing over. Advanced or system performance bank 1. Pin point check LED to CUV gear not switching." The cost is $708, but the $109 I paid for the diagnostic check goes towards that, plus I have a $50 coupon, so my cost will actually be $549. I was just wondering if this sounds reasonable, as I honestly have no idea. Also, I am not a DIY-er, at all, so even if it's something that many people are able to do on their own, I would not be one of them. Thanks for any advice or opinions. I searched but couldn't really find anything for camshaft or CUV. Bryan
There have been a few reports on here of a small oil filter in the oil pressure line to this gear getting blocked. I have not done this job myself, perhaps someone will chime in with the details.

I read that thread, and I see that the blocked filter can lead to that particular code, but would a blocked filter also cause where it says "pin point check led to CUV gear not switching"? I'm not really sure if that's just part of the error code or something that would come from further inspection.
It is the oil pressure that makes the gear switch position by oil pressure. The oil has to go through this filter to move the position of the gear, so that if the filter is blocked this cannot happen. It would seem reasonable to change this filter first as it does not require much labor or parts, and even if it does not cure the problem "no guaranty" it would be foolish not to have changed the filter at your millage and change the gear leaving the old filter. I just had that code appear last weekend, at the start of a trip, of course, and the day after getting my oil changed. On the off-chance it was the fault of the new oil filter, I had that replaced, and it fixed it! Hooray! Immediately after replacing the oil filter, the light went off. So worth checking that before anything else.
