Attached is a picture of my driving ratio screen. This is what I have done in the first 3 weeks. This is in West Virginia and it has been cold and wife does preheat it in the mornings before school. This also included a 250 mile trip back from picking it up at the dealer though the mountains. And the driving ratio has not been reset since it was new included whatever the dealer did with it. Maybe someone can help me calculate my real MPGe.

cost of KWH here is .10 per KHW, gas is about 3.50 per gallon here average.

Here is my interpretation of wikipedia

    46.51 = [(156+755) miles x 34.02 kwh/gallon gas ]/[18 gallons x 34.02 kwh /gallon + 47 kwh x 1.15 wall efficiency ]

    Electricity efficiency:

    47 kWh x 1.15 (charging loss) = 54.05 kWh from the wall
    54.05 kWh / 156 EV miles = 0.3465 kWh/mi
    33.7 kWh (gallon equiv) / 0.3465 kWh/mi = 97.3 MPGe

    Gas efficiency:

    755 miles / 18 gallons = 41.9 MPG

    A few tips...

Do not preheat it. It'll use gas to warm up the cabin air temp is very inefficient. Instead, use the electric heaters embedded in the front seats. It takes less than a minute for the seat to get hot (at HIGH).

There are two EV Driving Ratio screens. You can reset one to keep it fresh and start from your normal routine. Check back in a month or so. :) I am sure others will have more tips.

Check out grill blocking and pump up your tires. You can find threads on both of these topics.

    Howdy!

I too have had my PIP a little over 3 weeks. A couple days ago I got around to check the air pressure in the tires. They were down to 20 lbs each. Got them up to a couple pounds above the recommendation. I have also used all the other suggestions on this forum, and now the ICE doesn't fire up until I am down to less than .1 mile of EV left.

I live in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS, lots of hills and it has been very cold out. Still averaging close to 70mpg in all my driving. I normally can do about 50% of my driving with the electric alone. The last month I have been doing a lot more trips due to some circumstances (only about 18% on electric alone), but I still love the car.

BTW, where the heck is the clutch? Always had one of them in all the other cars and trucks I have had over the past 50 years... :D

Clutches disconnect the driver from the road. PiP has none so we have 100% connection to the road. :D

You mean I don't have to stomp my left foot on the floor every time I put it in gear??? What fun is that? Actually I have owned one automatic transmission truck back a couple decades ago. I hated it with a passion! I didn't feel I had any control over what it was doing. Every time I went up a hill with a trailer, it was: Shift, shift, shift, shift.... Went back to my good old 5 speed after about of year of putting up with it.

Oddly enough the PIP gives me the feel that I am actually in charge of what it is doing most of the time (even though I know the computer does everything). I got used to it very quickly and love it.

Apparently Toyota did a bit better design work on LiIon batteries than did Boeing. :) Haven't heard of any PiP batteries catching on fire/leaking/melting.

Looks like that Boeing Dreamliner's Traction battery got a little too hot and leaked some coolant also, in Japan. Wonder if they have the same warranty as the Prius does? LOL

I think it is an aux battery for the Dreamliner. The same issue happened with Volt after the crash test. Battery coolant leaked and shorted out the electronics then the entire pack burst into flame. PiP has air con battery cooling system.
