My accident was around 1985, at which time the limitation was one year. California changed it to two years after 9/11, according to what I have since read. As I recall, my medical plan was OK covering my costs related to the accident as long as I didn't make a profit by having them pay. If there had been no recovery, I wasn't on the hook. I've noticed on the forms you fill out for treatment they always ask if you were injured in an accident and if it was work-related, so that your medical insurance company can go after other insurance.

Wow, no accidents in over 20 years! That's some crazy luck (or not a lot of driving).
I suspect the medical stuff has changed in those years as well. You're exactly right about them going after the other insurance company.

A lot of states are "no fault" which might as well be code for "rip me off, please."

My insurance is through AAA and runs about $1,100 per year for 100k/300k, uninsured motorist, medical, and car rental.

I've been driving for 23 years with no tickets and no accidents with about 18k miles per year. :)

I did get a parking ticket a few times, but two were dismissed on appeal.

    That's crazy.
I mean, there is a likelihood that you will find yourself in an accident through no fault of your own, and that likelihood is not zero!

A lot of accidents that aren't the fault of the driver can still be avoided. My friends say I have a knack for knowing what people are going to do a few moments before they do it. I credit that with saving my hide on more than one occasion. Of course, sometimes you're just sitting there at a light and get hit. Nothing you can do about those.

Yeah I try my best to be predictive as well. But still, 20+ years is mighty long, and you're right about the light thing.

I started driving for a living in So Calif. in 1966, probably averaging around 40k miles annually. I've cut way back now that I am semi-retired since 2006, putting about 15k on my own cars and another 2k on clients' cars. In one memorable 18 month period in the late nineties, I put 90k miles on a company Cadillac assigned to me. My company had merged with one in San Diego, and as an executive security driver, I was tasked with driving executives between L.A. and S.D., quite often making two and even three roundtrips a day. No chargeable accidents in my own cars in that 40+ years, a couple in company vehicles, but fortunately none involving injuries. For that reason, having that teenager hit me while I was stopped at a light, and sustaining injuries, was an insult! Last moving violation was in 1986, but I still keep an eye on the mirror!;) My son is in law enforcement, and I carry his business card, but so far (23 years) haven't needed to show it.

Seems high to me - I pay $648 per year for same coverage as you. I doubt PIP rates are that much higher than std Prius.

you're in SC, he's in SoCal.
no surprises there. if anything, he seems to be paying less than other people in the region.

Well, I do get an AARP discount now, one of the beni's of growing older. But my premium went up about $100/yr when I move to SC from CA, when I thought it would go down. I have changed insurance companies several times since moving to keep my home and auto premiums in check. Talk about ripoff, my home insurance is now almost 5 times higher than it was in CA 10 years ago, and my home in CA was worth about $250,000 more than my home now. But that's another story.....

You have to watch out who really carries your policy. In a lot of states, California included, there are brokers that sell auto insurance that is underwritten by "non-admitted carriers." Basically, it's a loophole in the law where they're allowed to sell insurance from companies that aren't allowed to sell their own insurance in the state. Then, when it comes time to pay up on a claim they evaporate and there's no legal way to force them to pay. It may have changed since I had family that worked in the industry, but I doubt it. Check whether your auto insurance company is a broker or the actual insurer.

AAA insurance isn't like other insurance. When you have a claim you don't even talk to them. You just take your car to whatever body shop you want and leave it there to be repaired. All you do is tell AAA where you took it. You will never see an adjuster, no one will call you, and other than having to pay nothing but your deductible you will never even know you have insurance. They pay every claim in full without contest.

Yeah, my parents used to have progressive through an agent and changing coverages was always a pain in the nice person. This is why I moved away from having brokered insurance to directly bought insurance from GEICO.

I guess it depends upon the state you are living in. I was involved years ago in a minor fender bender and was sued three years to the month of the accident. Went to "arbitration" and was settled by my insurance company. The entire process seemed like a "shakedown" to me with the arbitrator being very friendly with both attorney's! That is our system at work.
